Call for artists application

Deadline: 28 Sept 2015

MacDonald Drive is a site that boasts strong cultural and historical significance and is situated on the edge of both the Athabasca and Snye rivers. Macdonald Drive is also the main artery to allow traffic into Canada’s largest community recreation facility, MacDonald Island Park. This site is highly visible from Fort McMurray’s largest transportation and pedestrian bridge that passes over the Athabasca river connecting downtown Fort McMurray to its urban neighbourhoods. This project is funded by the percent for art reserve fund as per Municipal Public Art Policy (PRL-160).

The MacDonald Drive Project is open to local, national, and international artists.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) intends to commission an artist or artist team to design and install the regions first large scale public art piece that showcases Wood Buffalo’s vibrant culture, rich heritage and natural beauty. Being situated in the Northern Hemisphere, lighting elements are essential in order to exhibit the piece during the dark winter months. In addition to this, artists and artist teams are encouraged to focus on designs that offer community engagement opportunities during the creation and/or fabrication of the design.

Applicants to the MacDonald Island Park Project will be subject to a 3 phase selection process:

  • Phase 1: Request for Qualifications – Artists and artist teams have 3 weeks to submit qualifications for review by a Public Art Selection Panel.
  • Phase 2: Request for Proposals – Three successful applicants will enter into a design competition and will be awarded 4 weeks to submit a proposal for the project.
  • Phase 3: Public Review and Voting – Design proposals will be circulated for public review and voting over 3 weeks. Feedback from the public will be used in the scoring process for the final selection panel evaluation of the proposals.
