Now in it’s second year, Awakenings 2017 is a ten-day thematic residency. It provides a sacred and inspirational space to explore creativity and intuition within the framework of earth-based spirituality. The objective is to engage holistic practices that connect mind, body, and spirit with the self and environment. The goal is to incorporate metaphysical practices within the arts and examine how this knowledge has been viewed historically and how current views can be integrated, disrupted, or altered.

Awakening 2017 topics such as herbalism, mindfulness, shamanism, divination, and ritual will be viewed from a variety of perspectives. They include pop culture, psychology, alchemy, theology, history, and post-colonial discourse. Along with programmed time, residents have free time to work individually or collaboratively in a studio. Methods of art making can be visual, time-based, photography, craft, writing, music, dance, or performance art. Supportive discussions of residents’ work in progress occur on a regular basis.

Awakening 2017 Artist Benefits

Artists will benefit through secluded and intensive focused studio time. Professional and peer-based instruction and critique in a unique and supportive environment is offered. Further, the communal living style of Artscape Gibraltar Point offers artists an opportunity to interact closely and on a personal level with their peers and fellow residency participants.

As well, the residency’s setting affords residents the chance to experience life in one of North America’s most unique communities, the Toronto Islands. The community has a unique history of social activism, creativity, and a generosity of spirit. Off island, artists can experience the vibrant arts and cultural scene of the city of Toronto. Toronto is one of North America’s largest cities, located only fifteen minutes away by ferry.
