Deadline: 31 Oct 2018

Downtown Castlegar is one of the few venues in Canada where artists have the opportunity to show and sell outdoor sculptural work. It brings international artists to the community and supports emerging local and regional talent. Castlegar’s annual exhibit is more than three times the size of that first year. The permanent collection grows with each People’s Choice award. Public enthusiasm for this cultural economy experiment increases at a similar pace. It places Sculpturewalk at the epicenter of a regional culture boom.

Castlegar Sculpturewalk 2019 Artist Benefits

Each participating artist receives an honorarium of $500 (Canadian) and up to $250 in shipping costs. The winning sculpture is purchased for up to $15K. Accommodation for the installation/opening weekend is covered along with an opening gala. Sculpturewalk has an excellent sales/leasing program. The artist receives 70% of all sales and leasing fees. Many of these sculptures are located throughout the West Kootenay area and British Columbia. A free calendar is produced showcasing the artists work.

About Castlegar Sculpturewalk

The benefits of the Sculpturewalk program to Castlegar have been huge. The program has an even broader impact to the cultural economy than initially imagined. The Kootenays are an area rich with artists, but galleries – particularly outdoor ones – are extremely limited or entirely unavailable to outdoor sculptures. It is important that Castlegar brings international artists to the community to share their perspectives. It is crucial that emerging local and regional artists are supported. With this experience, many artists have gone on to win large-scale commissions in larger, urban centres.

With additional pieces showcased annually, Castlegar is able to feature sculptures from across the world and down the street. It is amazing to look back at how the community has created a vibrant, dynamic public art program respected world-wide. Castlegar Sculpturewalk is the #1 rated local attraction on TripAdvisor.
