Applications are now being accepted by the Newton Free Library for the July – December 2020 exhibits.  Applicants must be from the New England region (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island). All work presented must be original and produced within the last three years. Giclée reproductions of original work will not be accepted. Giclée printed photographs are accepted.

The Walker System is used for January – June 2020 Exhibits. Therefore, artwork must have a wire across the back to accommodate this system. Free-standing sculptural pieces are not shown. Artists are responsible for hanging their work using the Walker Rods. Please refrain from submitting material that is obscene, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment. One packet per artist. If you are applying for a group show, submit one combined packet. If you have shown at the library before, then you are welcome to apply again in two years.

You must be available to show for at least four out of the six months in the current round. If accepted, the library will determine when your show will take place and in which space. The assignments are fixed and cannot be changed. The jury’s selections will be posted on the Newton Free Library’s website by Friday, February 7, 2020. If selected the library will mail you a packet with further instructions.

July – December 2020 Exhibits Artist Benefits

No commission for work sold. The library does extensive amount of outreach to help promote artists’ work. Media coverage attracts attention to our galleries. There is a robust presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The library has ongoing listings in Art New England and other area publications including the local press. Art shows are featured on they library’s homepage. Price lists are made available to library patrons in the exhibit spaces.

About the Newton Free Library

The Newton Free Library mounts twenty-three exhibits per year in two exhibit spaces (Gallery and Main Hall). As one of the busiest public library buildings in Massachusetts, they are a state-of-the-art facility with over 45,000 visitors each month. The library is a community center at the heart of cultural activity in Newton, MA. In addition to art gallery openings, an extremely active programming calendar includes a wide variety of events for all ages. They have a highly-regarded concert series which often attracts a standing room only audience (150+) on Sundays that takes place in a room adjacent to the galleries.

Newton, MA is a city south west of Boston with a population of approximately 90K. Many of our residents are highly educated and include more than one Nobel Prize winner. Most are very tuned into the shows in our gallery shows and eagerly await them each month.
