About Artrooms Fair

Artrooms Fair’s mission is to exhibit artworks in an intimate surrounding. It shortens the distance between artists, curators, and visitors away from the daunting walls of the white cube ideology of the gallery space. After four editions, the fair has become the largest event for independent artists in the UK. It is one of the most talked about in the UK art’s calendar, receiving approximately 1,700 applications and showcasing more than 1,000 art works. Artrooms Fair has been receiving applications from 65 countries worldwide. Artrooms’ most innovative concept is to reconnect artists and galleries. It turns the fair into a hunting ground for scouting international trends. Since the last edition, the fair has engaged galleries launching a new affiliation programme. Artrooms has became not just an innovative fair for art buyers but also a place where enthusiastic visitors can approach art for the first time and enter the artist’s universe.

Hidden 2018 – Call For Artists

Hidden 2018 – Call For Artists

Rookwood Cemetary announces a call for artists for Hidden 2018, the 10th anniversary of the Rookwood Cemetery Sculpture Walk. The exhibition runs from 1 September to 1 October 2018.

Click here for the application / registration

Deadline: 14 Mar 2018

No application fee

Hidden is Rookwood Cemetary’s signature annual event. Hidden was established to encourage public use of the historic Rookwood Cemetery, the oldest, largest and most multicultural cemetery in Australia. The exhibition is a platform for community engagement. It remains respectful of its purpose and place. It aims to de-mystify some of the misconceptions surrounding cemeteries as dark and intimidating settings.

Hidden 2018 is an outdoor sculpture exhibition that provides artists with the opportunity to showcase their work in Australia’s most historic and culturally significant cemetery. Rookwood Cemetery is interested in exhibiting works that respond to the themes surrounding the Rookwood site such as history, culture, remembrance, and love. They are interested in applications that are inspired by the sculpture walk’s 10th anniversary. This may include, but is not limited to, notions relating to the changing role of public interaction with cemeteries over the past ten years such as the reinvention of graveyards into active parklands. Other themes include an exploration of where we see ourselves as a community in terms of conversations around end of life and how cemeteries could look in the future.

Rookwood Cemetary is open to a wide range of artistic approaches. Artists can choose to approach the themes in a representational, conceptual, symbolic, or abstract way. Artists may propose works yet to be made or existing works that relate to the exhibition themes produced post-September 2016.

Hidden 2018 Awards

  • Artists selected will receive $300 per artwork
  • Artists whose artwork requires transporting from a distance over 500km may be eligible for an additional $200 payment
  • Rookwood Cemetery Sculpture Award (non-acquisitive) $10,000
  • Elite Funeral Director’s Award $1000
  • People’s Choice Award $500
  • Staff Choice Award $250
  • Artist at the Armory Award $800
  • Peacock Gallery and Auburn Arts Studio Residency and Mentorship Award $1000

Hidden 2017 saw visitation double with just under 5,000 people visiting the exhibition. Media coverage increased three fold. Hidden is continuing, year-on-year, to grow in popularity. It has firmly established itself as part of the Sydney outdoor sculpture event calendar.

About Rookwood Cemetary

Steeped in history and reflecting the cultural diversity of wider Sydney, Rookwood Cemetery is a tranquil and fascinating place of historical significance and considerable natural and built beauty. Each year over 2,000 interments and commemorations are performed, representing the vast majority of religious and cultural groups throughout Sydney.
