About the LUX Center for the Arts

LUX Center for the Arts is a non-profit which brings art to the community. Their mission is to enhance the lives of a diverse public through art education. They provide learning opportunities in contemporary art and fine craft through hands-on art classes, residency programs, interactive exhibitions, historical displays, and community outreach.

LUX fills a gap in art education in schools, serves disadvantaged youth, and provides outreach to the community. Students of all ages and skill levels work in professional quality studios to learn about art by making it through guided experimentation and looking at it in the galleries. LUX follows national standards for art education. They provide tools and materials for creating paintings, weavings, photography, prints, and ceramics. They host a professional artist-in-residence program.

As a tool for teaching the public about art and as a source of revenue, LUX provides educational exhibitions in galleries that specialize in contemporary art and fine craft media (prints, photos, clay, glass, wood, fiber, and metal). The galleries and the historical displays provide a venue for tourism and economic development.

Gladys M. Lux donated the building for the Lux Center. She left her unique collections of 1,700 dolls, 500 prints, and antique paper weights. LUX gives the public insight into these objects, the collector, and their historical significance.

The NCS advances the stature of collage as a major art medium and assists in the public education through exhibits and workshops, lectures, and publications. NCS is supported by its members who pay $35.00 per year (a tax deductible donation to the art foundation, exempt under 501(c)3 classification with the I.R.S.).
