Built in 1838 the gallery has 12 foot ceilings and five gallery rooms.

About Mills Pond Gallery
Smithtown Township Arts Council operates Mills Pond Gallery in an historic Greek Revival building built in 1838. Adaptation of Mills Pond House for public use has introduced modern mechanical systems to the structure without impairing its historic integrity. Gallery lighting and handicapped access have been designed to complement the original building. Notable among the ca. 1838 Grecian details are the gold-veined marble mantelpieces, ornamental plater “centres” applied to the ceilings, and front and rear stoops supported by wooden Doric columns.
Mills Pond house preserves the locality’s name, but departs from tradition in other respects. Its high-style Grecian design is unusual on Long Island. The hand of an accomplished architect is nearly unique at this early date. Pollard’s influence is seen in the use of imported materials: Albany boards, Carolina yellow pine, English glass, Connecticut stone, and Santo Domingan mahogany. The silvered hardware, decorative plaster, and carpeting were bought in New York City shops. William Wickham Mills died in 1865. His home descended in the family until its gift to the Town of Smithtown in 1976. Today, it is preserved for use as an arts-related facility.

Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition announces a call for artists for Wide Open 11, a national juried show. This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories, 18 years of age or older. The broad theme of Wide Open 11 encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love ‐ wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open ‐ but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite ‐ wide open to attack…corruption…failure. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show looks to explore the idea of “wide open” in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche.

Search for artists to develop Mother Cabrini Memorial now open. To be placed in Battery Park City’s South Cove. The memorial honors the legacy of Mother Cabrini, who dedicated her life to serving her community and those in need.
New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the Mother Cabrini Memorial will be placed in Battery Park City’s South Cove in direct view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Mother Cabrini Memorial Commission has begun its search for artists who will design and execute the Memorial honoring the legacy of Mother Cabrini. Mother Cabrini founded dozens of institutions that served the less fortunate, including educational organizations and programs to support her fellow Italian-Americans who immigrated to the United States.

“This memorial will honor the legacy of Mother Cabrini – a great New Yorker and Italian-American – and the Commission chose a site that perfectly symbolizes her commitment to helping new Americans settle in the United States,” Governor Cuomo said. “We want this memorial to pay tribute to the charity and goodwill she spread to countless others in her lifetime, and I look forward to seeing the designs that the artists propose to capture that spirit of her generosity.”
The Mother Cabrini Memorial Commission will review and select finalists from the submitted proposals. They will recommend proposals to the Governor for his final selection.
Mother Cabrini Memorial Artist Benefits
The budget for design and fabrication of the Memorial artwork is up to $750,000, which includes an artist fee of up to, but not greater than, 20% of the total project budget cost. The total project cost must include delivery to the site and installation.
As part of this fee, the selected artist will be required to submit a final budget, produce completed designs, select a fabricator (if not already part of the team), and oversee the fabrication and installation of the artwork as well as guide any necessary landscape restoration or other treatments required at the site, two weeks after the award notification. The staff from the Battery Park City Authority and Office of General Services will be available to provide their technical expertise and site-specific knowledge in support of the implementation of this project.

Residency 108 announces a call for artists for the Residency 108 Spring 2020 Session, which will take place April 19th – May 17th, 2020. Two four week-long residencies are offered each year, one during the month of October and one in May. Residency 108 invites emerging and established artists, writers and thinkers of all disciplines to immerse themselves in their creative practice. They welcome those who work with nature, ecology, and the installation of temporary outdoor land-art works. The residency is free apart from the cost of travel and material expenses which must be assumed by the individual.

Artists of any age from any country may apply. Residency 108 accepts solo artists and collaborating teams of up to three people. They are interested in applicants whose practice involves a defined engagement with landscape and ecology, or projects that employ historical or first-hand research of the 108 site. Residency 108 Spring 2020 Session Artist Benefits
The program accommodates three artists at a time. Each resident is provided with a room, working facilities, and a weekly stipend for food. Participants are responsible for cooking their own meals. The residency is located in a remote area. There is no public transportation in the area. Residency 108 does not have a vehicle available for resident use apart from a bike. However, they provide weekly trips to shop for supplies and food. Each resident will be asked to present their work during the residency. Weekly critiques are held as a group and sometimes with a visiting critic.
About Residency 108
Residency 108 is a rural residency program with a focus on landscape and ecology. They program is unique in that it invites artists to engage with a specific site, 108 acres of pastoral land which was used as a horse farm in the last century. The property features rolling hills, mowed paths, meadows, densely wooded forests, wetlands with a few ponds of varying size, and a seasonal stream. In addition to these ecosystems, a variety of native plant species host habitats for birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The program is ideal for artists who wish to engage with the landscape and prefer isolation to interaction. If you require constant contact with civilization this may not be the program for you.

Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises. A garden of purple is always in bloom! NYC4PA Primary Colors calls for entry have been some of their favorite contests. Though red, yellow, and blue are, in fact, primary colors they are not the not the only important hues out there for the color photographer.

Secondary colors: orange, green, and purple are as impactful and can be the foundation for equally compelling imagery. NYC4PA is looking for images in which one of these colors stands out as a critical element. It can be black and white with a single point of color; a green, orange, or purple monochrome; or any image where a secondary color stands out as a focal point. The possibilities in nature are endless with green leaves and lawns, orange bursts of autumn color and purple flowers, and magical purple hazes that can set off late afternoon scenes. Clothing, pumpkins, traffic lights, and automobiles, the list goes on and on.

American Artists Professional League announces a call for artists for the 91st Grand National Exhibition. Open to artists 18 and over. Only works in representational or traditional realism will be accepted. Works in oil, acrylic, watermedia, mixed media, pastel, graphics, and sculpture will be accepted. About The American Artists Professional League
In 1928 F. Ballard Williams, Assistant Treasure of the National Academy of Design in New York, called a meeting of 15 members of the Salmagundi Club. The purpose: to discuss the need for a national organization to meet the increasing interests in traditional realism in American art. The attendees all agreed that an organization designed to protect artists’ interests and promote traditional American art was necessary. The American Artists Professional League (AAPL) was born.
The AAPL first focused on the issue of obtaining commissions of official portraits for American Artists. By using its national stature, the AAPL influenced a rider to a Congressional Bill stipulating that all official portraits paid for with taxpayers’ dollars were to be painted by American artists. A fact that remains in effect to this day.

4heads announces a call for artists for the 12th Annual Portal: Governors Island (formerly Governors Island Art Fair), New York’s largest independent exhibition. Portal will feature scores of artists of exceptional talent. Each will be awarded an exhibition room or large outdoor space in the historic and beautifully dilapidated buildings of Colonels Row. Artist Equity
The NY Times succinctly identified 4heads’ target audience with the headline, “Art Fair for the 99%”. They aim their 12th Annual Portal: Governors Island outreach to the public and artists alike. They are an economically and culturally diverse population of all ages as well as non-arts-going audiences. Portal:GI exhibitors are over 50% female, 35% non-white, and ages 14 to 89. Arts education outreach youth participants, who also show at Portal:GI, are 70% female and 80% non-white, including 85 children from AHRC NYC with developmental disabilities. Education program youth participants raise awareness for nonprofits including Lower East Side Girls Club, Chinatown Y, Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, and AHRC NYC, who serve children with developmental disabilities and K-12 youth from underserved communities.

About Mills Pond Gallery
Since 1978, the council has made its home in the historic Mills Pond House. Occupied by the prosperous Mills family (early settlers of the Town of Smithtown) until 1976. This area is a rare survival of an agricultural hamlet once common on Long Iland. William Wickham Mills inherited the family land and began to construct the Mills Pond House in 1838. This Greek Revival style home is the earliest documented architect-designed house in the area.
The Mills Pond Gallery strives to promote an active process of exploration involving creativity and the arts, providing inspiring and enjoyable opportunities for visitors to explore different points of view, challenge preconceptions and prejudices, and foster critical thinking.
