About Derwent

For generations, artists have chosen and trusted the Derwent brand for art materials the world over. Their time-honoured skills, modern manufacturing methods, and quality control enable them to create the world’s largest range of fine art pencils, pens, and artists accessories. Their story begins in the heart of the Lake District with the discovery of graphite in the Borrowdale Valley and the birth of pencil making in Keswick. By the 1800s, pencil making in Keswick was a thriving cottage industry. The Cumberland Pencil Company created its first pencil in 1832. The first Derwent colour pencil was introduced in 1938. The Pencil Museum still stands on the site of Derwent’s original factory in Keswick. Derwent has continued to be proud of its Cumbrian roots. In 2008, a purpose-built factory was opened in Lillyhall.
