New in 2021: Accessibility space for an artist or writer! Saltonstall is currently building an accessible addition. It includes a private accessible living space with a roll-in shower, private accessible studio (for a visual artist or writer), shared accessible kitchen and dining area, accessible laundry facilities, and adjoining private suite for a personal care assistant if needed.
COVID, the unwanted guest
Saltonstall is under no illusions: The coronavirus will be with us — in some way — through next summer. They are planning a 2021 residency season because they believe they can offer a safe residency experience in a way that is responsible and responsive to the needs of artists and writers while protecting their health and that of the staff and local community.
2021 Saltonstall Residency Program Dates
Second annual six-night residency for artist/writer parents:
Thursday, June 3 – Wednesday, June 9. Please note: this residency is strictly for artist/writer parents who have at least one dependent child (under 18) at home.
Four-week residencies:

Two-week residencies:

Residencies provide artists time and private space to do their work without interruption. During one month at Saltonstall, residents are often able to complete at least 3-4 months worth of work. The shorter, two-week residencies have an identical effect. There are minimal chores, and restricted visitor hours ~ all of which allows for maximum focus on the artists work.
There is no cost to attend Saltonstall and no application fee associated with this application. Additionally, to help offset travel to Ithaca and other personal expenses, they have increased their stipends to $750 for each month-long Fellow, $375 for each two-week Fellow, and $200 for each artist/writer attending the six-night residency for parents.
About Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts
Saltonstall is situated in a beautiful and inspiring setting of fields and wooded hills, approximately eight miles from downtown Ithaca.
A Saltonstall residency is a small community. They strive to provide a quiet, inviting, respectful, and nurturing community for creative individuals looking for uninterrupted time to focus on their craft. Each residency is comprised of just five individuals: one poet, one writer, one photographer or filmmaker, and two visual artists.
Saltonstall believes in and values a diverse community of creative individuals. To that end, they hope that all artists and writers feel welcome to apply for a residency, regardless of one’s level of education, experience, race, age, sex, religious belief, marital status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or national origin.
