Leslie Jeffery [Certified Visual Artist – Largo, Florida]

Leslie Jeffery [Certified Visual Artist – Largo, Florida]

Leslie Jeffery is a Side Arts Certified Visual Artist from Largo, Florida.

Leslie Jeffery was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and became aware of art at a young age from her grandmother, an accomplished oil painter. Leslie studied painting, art history, and constructive design at Florida State University and has a BS in Art Education from FSU. Her large acrylic abstracts are widely exhibited and have received numerous awards.

Leslie works from her studios in Largo, Florida, and Highlands, North Carolina, where she spends the summer. Leslie’s paintings are primarily large format acrylic abstract compositions. The early Abstract Expressionists are her greatest influence, especially Franz Klein, Joan Mitchell, and Lee Krasner. Her work is about the process and features texture – light or heavy, marks of all kinds, deep colors, many layers, patterned backgrounds, drips, and various mediums. They convey energy and mood, and are lyrical. She creates interest and curiosity through the simplicity or complexity of the piece. Leslie finds the painting process exhilarating and loves to talk to viewers about their reaction to and perception of her work. She feels successful when she believes her most recent artwork is her best. While a few are difficult to plan and execute and others come easily, she usually thinks, “What fun that was!”

Memberships and Exhibitions

Leslie is a Signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters (ISAP) and The Florida Artists Group (FLAG). She is a Past President of Las Damas de Arte, a Tampa-based group of women who exhibit together and raise money for art scholarships. Leslie was co-founder of The Carolina Gallery of Fine Art in Highlands, North Carolina, and in August, 2019, was the Presenter for the Art League of Highlands-Cashiers at The Bascom in Highlands, North Carolina.

Qrcky [Certified Visual Artist – Baltimore, MD]

Qrcky [Certified Visual Artist – Baltimore, MD]

Qrcky is a Side Arts Certified Visual Artist from Baltimore, Maryland.

Qrcky’s passion for art began in the seventies in southern Virginia, where art was not a part of his family’s culture. Despite this, he was captivated by the works of Chuck Jones, Norman Rockwell, and Bob Ross. He would spend hours attempting to replicate their styles while watching cartoons.

However, it wasn’t until two decades later and after enduring a difficult marriage and subsequent relationships, that Qrcky returned to art as a form of self-expression. Drawing on his creative freedom as a child, he found solace in painting and discovered his unique voice.

To fully immerse himself in his art, Qrcky isolated himself from friends and family. This allowed him to focus and create his most vital work while experiencing emotional distress and displacement. Through this process, he found a sense of contentment and wholeness in his art.

Enter by: 31 August 2023

All artists who submit artwork to Storytellers will be accepted and have at least one of their submitted works posted and promoted on the gallery’s website and to their client list. A select number of artists will be chosen to send their work to the gallery for the in-person exhibition at a brick-and-mortar gallery in Laguna Beach, California.

About Las Laguna Art Gallery

Since 2013, Las Laguna Gallery has held open calls for art, calls for entry, and calls for art opportunities for artists to promote and sell their art in a gallery.

Quickly becoming one of the premier contemporary and fine art galleries in Laguna Beach, California; Las Laguna Gallery is dedicated to the exploration and engagement of contemporary and fine art visual culture – regionally, nationally, and internationally; through unique collaborations between artists, students, and the community.

Las Laguna Gallery is located on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Village. Laguna Village is an artist alcove on the cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This location is a must stop location with artist galleries and jewelry shops. The location features a restaurant, bar, and there is live music in the fire-side theater Tuesday through Saturday.

Unlike other art galleries in Laguna Beach who only select local artists, Las Laguna Art Gallery chooses artists from around the globe.

With more than 100 art galleries and artist studios to explore, you’ll come to understand why Laguna Beach is a beloved “art colony.” In fact, the area was discovered by artists. In the late 1800s, visitors were making an annual pilgrimage through the canyons to camp at Laguna Beach each summer. By 1903, painters like Norman St Clair were visiting from San Francisco, attracted to the landscape and light only found on the coast of Laguna. Like tourists of any era, St Clair returned home with glowing reports and landscape paintings that led his artist friends to follow him south. It wasn’t long before plein air (painting outdoors) artists like William Wendt and Frank Cuprien moved to Laguna Beach. Within a few years, Laguna Beach had a permanent population of about 300 people – half of whom were artists.

Protect Your Artist Rights: Essential Tips for Visual Artists

Protect Your Artist Rights: Essential Tips for Visual Artists

In the realm of visual arts, creativity knows no bounds; however, as a visual artist, it’s crucial to understand and protect your rights to ensure that your creative endeavors are respected and valued. In this blog post, we will delve into essential tips for visual artists to safeguard their artist rights and preserve the integrity of their work. Moreover, we’ll introduce call for artists opportunities that not only provide exposure but also uphold your rights as an artist.

Protect Your Artist Rights: Essential Tips for Visual Artists

  1. Understand Copyright and Licensing: Educate yourself about copyright laws and licensing agreements. Copyright gives you exclusive rights to your original works, allowing you to control how they are used, reproduced, and distributed. Utilize licenses to grant specific permissions to others while retaining your rights. Be cautious when granting licenses and ensure they align with your artistic vision and intentions.
  2. Keep Detailed Records: Maintain records of your creative process, including sketches, drafts, and notes. These records can serve as evidence of your work’s originality and help protect your rights in case of disputes or infringement claims.
  3. Watermark Your Digital Work: When sharing your artwork online, consider cropping and watermarking your images. Watermarks can deter unauthorized use of your work and help identify its original source. Ensure that the watermark does not obstruct the viewer’s ability to appreciate your art.
  4. Use Contracts for Collaborations: When collaborating with other artists, writers, or businesses, always use written contracts prepared in advance. Clearly outline the terms of the collaboration, including usage rights, payment, and credit attribution. Contracts provide legal protection and ensure that everyone involved understands their roles and responsibilities.
  5. Research Call for Artists Opportunities: Participating in call for artists opportunities is an excellent way to gain exposure and recognition. Look for platforms like Side Arts that prioritize artist rights and maintain high standards for curated exhibitions. These opportunities allow you to showcase your work while retaining control over how it’s presented and used. Read the call for artists thoroughly to understand how, when, and where your artwork may be shown or reproduced. Make an informed decision and avoid anything that does not provide explicit terms of service.
  6. Protect Your Online Content: Regularly monitor online platforms for unauthorized use of your artwork. If you encounter copyright infringement, take immediate action by sending a cease and desist letter or filing a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice. Many social media platforms have mechanisms to report and remove infringing content.
  7. Seek Legal Advice: If you encounter complex legal issues related to your artist rights, consider consulting with an attorney specializing in intellectual property law. Legal professionals can provide guidance on protecting your work, negotiating contracts, and pursuing legal action if necessary.
  8. Apply for Copyright Registration: Although copyright protection is automatic upon creating an original work, registering your copyright with the appropriate authorities offers additional legal benefits. Copyright registration enhances your ability to enforce your rights and seek damages in case of infringement.

Conclusion

As a visual artist, protecting your artist rights is paramount to preserving the value and integrity of your creative expressions. By understanding copyright laws, maintaining detailed records, and using contracts, you can safeguard your work and make informed decisions about its usage. Furthermore, call for artists opportunities, such as those provided by Side Arts, not only offer opportunities but also respect and uphold your rights as an artist. Take the next step in your artistic journey by participating in curated exhibitions that prioritize your creative vision and ensure your rights are maintained. Embrace these tips, assert your rights, and continue to thrive as a respected and empowered visual artist.
