AIR Studio Paducah 2019 Artist Benefits

The AIR Studio Paducah 2019 residency affords time and space for focused, independent work, the development of new ideas, and experimentation. Visits to area cultural centers, galleries, and performance venues as well as short trips to regional arts facilities can open up a range of networking possibilities. AIR Studio Paducah features a storefront gallery/multi-purpose space that can be used for exhibitions or presentations during the residency.

About AIR Studio Paducah

AIR Studio Paducah is in its 14th year as an artist residency program. It is situated in the heart of the LowerTown Arts District, Paducah, Kentucky. Since 2004, creatives have passed through the AIR doors to make the most of the space and a stretch of undistracted time as envisioned by founder Alonzo Davis, himself an artist.

Drawn to Paducah by the Artist Relocation Program, Davis initially considered LowerTown as the location for a personal studio/retreat. Inspired by working retreat experiences in California, Costa Rica, Connecticut, Wyoming, Colorado, and Virginia, Davis decided to establish an artist residency program. Not only would visiting artists benefit, but also their interaction with a changing influx of creatives from outside could lend an additional dynamic to the evolving LowerTown community. An active residency program would heighten the arts district’s visibility.

For most of its existence, AIR residents have been visual and fiber artists, a few photographers, and a scattering of creatives in other disciplines. The application process has since expanded and opened up to writers, architects, composers and improvisational choreographers. Geographically, AIR residents hail from all over the U.S. east, west, north, south and Canada.

“The perks of a residency at AIR Studio include time to focus on getting work done and the chance to work in the close-knit atmosphere of the community, which is generally supportive of artists… the studio space is a large open space which accommodates work in a variety of disciplines.”

Fantastic Fibers 2018 Juror

Arturo Alonzo Sandoval, juror, is a fiber artist whose experimental techniques and expressive interpretations have earned him an international reputation. Arturo is one of Kentucky’s most original, influential, and significant artists. His work is in the collections of the New York City Museum of Modern Art’s Architecture and Design Collection, as well as galleries and private collections throughout the world.

“What distinguishes me from other artists working in fiber is my choice to mainly explore and recycle twentieth century industrial materials that have been primarily designed as tapes or films. Incorporating them into woven or interlaced webs provides for me permutations for my design concepts which are personalized into a visual vocabulary of the sky, water, landscape; and more recently, issues related to international and domestic politics, terrorism, the total nuclear threat, the cosmic realms, and personal spiritual beliefs.” – Sandoval
