The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (RICPA) announces a call for artists, The Heart Goes Nine: Exploring Personal Vision. This is a juried call for photography juried by J. Sybylla Smith, who brings her personal belief – “for every mile the eye sees the heart goes nine.” She is turning it into an opportunity for photographers to explore their personal vision and unique image making abilities to visualize their heart song.

Artists may submit up to 10 photographs. The entry fee is $45 for the first three images and $10 for each subsequent image.
RICPA is looking to present:
- a diverse yet highly personal look at image-making and photography’s ability to capture and express emotion
- idiosyncratic means of visual expression which are experimental, innovative and heartfelt
- a visual representation of your heart song.
Open to artists 18 years or older. Open to all forms of photographic image-making in any process or technology, current, or historical. Work must be your original creation. All work must be exhibition ready, no saw-tooth hangers. Work that does not follow the guidelines, or is deemed not to be a faithful representation of the image submitted, will not be exhibited.
Important Dates:
- Exhibition: Thursday, February 20th, thru Friday, March 13th, 2020
- Registration Deadline: December 13th
- Delivery of Accepted Work: On or before February 15th
- Reception and Awards: September 19th, 2019 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.
The Heart Goes Nine Juror
J. Sybylla Smith, is an independent curator, educator, and photographer with international reach. Through all her activities, she invests in helping others develop their personal vision. Her Concept Aware® curriculum provides a unique concept development framework to strengthen creative practice. Smith lectures and writes on visual culture, the creative practice, and gender parity in photography. Concept Aware® is taught in a variety of formats including weekend workshops in her Somerville MA studio and a week-long class taught at Maine Media College and Workshops.
As an adjunct professor, thesis advisor, and guest lecturer she has worked with the School of Visual Arts New York, Harvard University, Emerson College, Emmanuel College, and Tufts Museum School of the Fine Arts. She has curated exhibitions internationally and her involvement in Tokyo Photo and Paris Photo has established her relationships with international galleries and arts organizations. Smith has juried for Critical Mass by Photolucida and the traveling exhibit, the Fence, sponsored by United Photo Industries. She is an avid portfolio reviewer participating in photo-centric reviews nationally and is an active member of the Society of Photographic Educators.

Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts announces a call for artists for The Naked Print: A Juried National Photography Exhibition. The Naked Print is a call for work with no boundary layer, no barrier between the viewer and the work. This is your chance to go topless, no glass, no glazing, display your work without reflections. Explore the physical qualities of ink or emulsion on paper, without hiding surface, texture and material under glass. Open to all subject matter, a juried call to celebrate the physicality of the print itself, the naked print.

Lose prints, top mounted prints, prints on aluminum, canvas, or fabric are some of the options. Sculptural works and handmade books are welcome. Float frames are acceptable as are conventionally framed and/ or matted work so long as there is no glazing. This call is open to all forms of photography and all photo based work, alternative processes, and photo based printmaking. The only requirement is that the work includes some form of photographic process and that you build no walls or barriers between the viewer and the work – no glass, no plexi unless it’s behind the print. Show us your true colors and go topless!
Entry Fee: Artists may submit up to ten photographs. The entry fee is $20 for the first two images and $10 for each subsequent image. All CAFE fees are non-refundable and must be paid by credit/debit card. Juror’s decisions are final.
Size Limit: Maximum size 48” including the frame. Artists may have multiple pieces (diptych, triptych) to make up one work.
Sales and Commissions: The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts retains a 40% commission on works sold, 20% for current members.
The Naked Print Juror
Stephen Fisher, a master printmaker and professor at Rhode Island Collage. Stephan earned an M.F.A. in printmaking from Yale University and has spent the better part of the past 35 years teaching printmaking. In addition, Stephen is an accomplished artist with a unique application of glass plate printmaking as part of his practice.
Fisher’s work has been exhibited in a variety international venues and earned numerous awards in a wide range of competitions. His drawings and prints can be found in numerous public, corporate, and private collections. Public recognition of Fisher’s efforts include three Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Fellowships and a regional N.E.A. Fellowship.
Stephen has a fascination with the viscosity of light and the tactile, sensual quality of materials. Recognized for his hyper realistic drawings and prints he freely admits that on the most basic level all of his images are just so much dirt on paper. The tactile presence of material compulsively manipulated is perhaps the only real part of this realism.
The Naked Print Artist Benefits
This juried exhibition is your chance to show less conventional photo based work or experiment with new processes and materials. This is the opportunity you have been waiting for, a chance to exhibit work that may not conform to the framing or presentation restrictions of many galleries. There is $500 in prize money to be awarded by master printmaker Steven Fisher. $200 will be awarded for first place, $100 will be awarded for second place, and $50 for first third place. This is an incentive to try printing on aluminum, fabric, natural papers or any other less conventional surface. Challenge yourself to try something new.
