Virginia van Gaalen [Certified Visual Artist – Bucharest, Romania]

Virginia van Gaalen is a Side Arts Certified Visual Artist from Bucharest, Romania.

Born in Australia in 1972 and finishing her Visual Arts degree at Charles Sturt University, Virginia van Gaalen traveled overseas for the next few years. Taken sporadically over many years, Virginia’s photographs often capture the human landscape and the layers and textures that life creates. Sometimes documentary in nature, her images capture these moments. Her photos evoke a sense of isolation at times; however, they always have a sense of the human presence.

Having lived in 7 different countries, Virginia van Gaalen has been working as a full time teacher for 18 years, travelled extensively throughout Asia, and recently moved to Europe. The last three years, she has dedicated her time to becoming a full-time artist.

As someone who lives internationally, her artwork is influenced by the country in which she lives. Virginia enjoys interpreting her ideas in a variety of media and often plays with different processes within her themes. Her paintings capture the world around her. They are varied from the cityscapes of the Philippines that embodied the densely populated city of Manila to the delicate mixed media work of Chinese shophouses of Asia.

Her hand painted ceramic pieces are as experimental as her techniques. Her recent works are layered with stencils and silkscreens creating individual pieces that reflect the urbanscape of Romania.

“The recent move to Romania is provocative and a different scene to my last. I am intrinsically motivated by my surroundings, and in my recent paintings the natural landscape has been my focus. The forests and lakes that surround Bucharest provide a great source of recreation, respite and relief from the current human condition. In my paintings, the unpredictability of our time complements the peace and tranquility of the natural landscape, as represented through the use of gestural lines and textures. I choose colours, using a limited palette that are found within the natural landscape. I attempt to capture my emotional and metaphorical response to my environments, communicating the essence of where I am in a particular moment, alongside an abstracted story that reflects where I have come from.”
