The Susquehanna Art Museum announces a call for artists for Creating Joy: Art Inspired By Music, a juried exhibition in the Lobby Gallery and DeSoto Family Vault to be held Friday, May 1 to Sunday, August 2, 2020. Sonic experience has long been a powerful influence on artistic expression. Practicing the visualization of music helped Modernist artists break free of traditional subject matter and begin to think abstractly. Artists such as Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg were directly inspired by the music they listened to in their studios, while musicians such as the Rolling Stones and Patti Smith collaborated with iconic artists to create art for their albums.

In a divisive contemporary world, music is one of the best ways to cultivate joy in our daily lives. Susquehanna Art Museum is interested in how you, as an artist, find joy at the intersection of music and art. Works selected for this exhibition will provide unique perspectives on the joyful relationship between music and art both visually and conceptually.
Creating Joy Artists Benefits
Chosen artists will be eligible for one of two prizes totaling $650. Juror’s Choice Prize is $400 and Viewer’s Choice Prize is $250. The Museum partners with other local organizations regularly to increase their reach. They take part in a city-wide monthly event, Third in the Burg, which offers free admission to all from 5 – 8 pm. This event significantly increases regular traffic, hosting between 150 – 400 people within a span of four hours. All artists are invited to submit an exhibition proposal to the Director of Exhibitions for a solo or group exhibition.

The Decatur Arts Festival draws approximately 60,000 people to downtown Decatur for a celebration of the arts that includes a juried Artists Market, Children’s Festival, New Dance, Literary Arts, Performing Arts Stage, and a Concert on the Square, as well as the Decatur Fine Art Exhibition 2020. This large audience represents a broad spectrum of knowledge and appreciation of the arts, and the exhibition addresses this spectrum with a diversity of styles and media. The 7% Georgia sales tax will be added at the point of sale. Sales from the fine art exhibition have increased each year. Chosen artists will receive an honorarium based on the CARFAC Fee Schedule at the “Other Public Places” level. Since 2017, approximately 200-300 visitors attend Doors Open After Dark each year. Artists will receive promotion through Guelph Museums’ website and social media pages to an audience of over 7,000 followers collectively.

Doors Open After Dark aims to provide space for historical truths and engage meaningfully with present-day communities impacted by those histories.

Berkeley Arts Council, Martinsburg, WV is pleased to announce a call for artists for a national juried watercolor exhibit, ‘Watercolor Expressions” to open May 20, 2020 at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg. The exhibit is open to all artists using watercolor as a critical component of their work. This includes portraits, figures, landscapes, still lifes, animals, abstracts, and floral themes. The exhibit is open to all watercolor artists throughout the continental United States over the age of 18. Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last three (3) years, and have not been previously exhibited in the Berkeley Art Works.
Juror: Nationally and internationally known artist and workshop instructor, Lynn Ferris, AWS, NWS, will be the juror of this exhibit. Ms. Ferris is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and Florida Watercolor Society.

A prize fund of $1,000 will be distributed among Best in Show, Merit Awards, and Honorable Mention awards. For selected artists, this is an excellent chance to receive recognition from their peers as well as the local and regional news media.

Residency 108 announces a call for artists for the Residency 108 Spring 2020 Session, which will take place April 19th – May 17th, 2020. Two four week-long residencies are offered each year, one during the month of October and one in May. Residency 108 invites emerging and established artists, writers and thinkers of all disciplines to immerse themselves in their creative practice. They welcome those who work with nature, ecology, and the installation of temporary outdoor land-art works. The program accommodates three artists at a time. Each resident is provided with a room, working facilities, and a weekly stipend for food. Participants are responsible for cooking their own meals. The residency is located in a remote area. There is no public transportation in the area. Residency 108 does not have a vehicle available for resident use apart from a bike. However, they provide weekly trips to shop for supplies and food. Each resident will be asked to present their work during the residency. Weekly critiques are held as a group and sometimes with a visiting critic.
About Residency 108
Residency 108 is a rural residency program with a focus on landscape and ecology. They program is unique in that it invites artists to engage with a specific site, 108 acres of pastoral land which was used as a horse farm in the last century. The property features rolling hills, mowed paths, meadows, densely wooded forests, wetlands with a few ponds of varying size, and a seasonal stream. In addition to these ecosystems, a variety of native plant species host habitats for birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The program is ideal for artists who wish to engage with the landscape and prefer isolation to interaction. If you require constant contact with civilization this may not be the program for you.

The Heart Goes Nine Juror
J. Sybylla Smith, is an independent curator, educator, and photographer with international reach. Through all her activities, she invests in helping others develop their personal vision. Her Concept Aware® curriculum provides a unique concept development framework to strengthen creative practice. Smith lectures and writes on visual culture, the creative practice, and gender parity in photography. Concept Aware® is taught in a variety of formats including weekend workshops in her Somerville MA studio and a week-long class taught at Maine Media College and Workshops.
As an adjunct professor, thesis advisor, and guest lecturer she has worked with the School of Visual Arts New York, Harvard University, Emerson College, Emmanuel College, and Tufts Museum School of the Fine Arts. She has curated exhibitions internationally and her involvement in Tokyo Photo and Paris Photo has established her relationships with international galleries and arts organizations. Smith has juried for Critical Mass by Photolucida and the traveling exhibit, the Fence, sponsored by United Photo Industries. She is an avid portfolio reviewer participating in photo-centric reviews nationally and is an active member of the Society of Photographic Educators.

The Chaco Culture National Historic Park October residency is one of two residencies offered to artists at the park in 2020. The residency is inside the park, in National Park Service housing, and there is no studio. Artists will work plein air or in their lodging. This is a very isolated location.
Located in the four corners area of New Mexico and founded as an Antiquities Monument in 1907, Chaco Culture National Historical Park was operated for most of the 20th century as an anthropological storehouse of knowledge and evidence of the Chacoan Culture. This beautiful and isolated complex preserves the historical traces of the sacred ancestral culture to many of the existing pueblos of the Southwest. The park is a Dark Skies certified location, an ideal place for astronomy and astrophotography. The Monument expanded to its present boundaries and park designation in 1980.
The park is located in the open plains of Northwestern New Mexico, sharing borders with the Navajo Nation and BLM land. It is approximately one and a half hours from the closest city, Farmington, and two hours and forty minutes from Albuquerque. A vehicle is definitely required for this residency. (Lyft or Uber are never practical workarounds in the beautiful, isolated open spaces of this corner of New Mexico.)
Chaco Culture AiR: October 2020 Artist Benefits
Selected artists will receive a $1000 stipend and one month housing at NPS Housing in the National Park. This is a rare privilege usually available only to occasional visitors and anthropologists. The residency includes at least one public event at the park which allows the artists to engage with park visitors and discuss their work. Selected artists are eligible to donate a single artwork through NPAF that will (by mutual agreement) be a part of the NPS’s historic art collection. The National Parks Arts Foundation’s residencies were recently named one of 7 Artist Residency Programs ‘with career launching power.’ NPAF and this park were recently the subject of a Hyperallergic Feature about the usefulness of art in the National Parks as a way to counter rampant oil and gas development strategies.

The Artisan in Residence program is part of Ocean House Collection’s larger commitment to the community and the arts. Over the last several years, thousands of guests and community members have enjoyed art and programming at the Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn.
Many of the workshops and sessions are held in the historic School House Cottage, next to the Ocean House. Ocean House Artisan in Residence participants receive complimentary accommodations in the School House Cottage, meals during their extended weekend at Ocean House, and receive a $500 stipend.
