Saltonstall Residency Program (Ithaca, NY) – Call For Artists

The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts announces a call for artists for their 2021 Saltonstall Residency Program in Ithaca, New York. Each year, the Saltonstall Foundation awards free residencies to artists and writers who are residents of New York State and Indian Nations therein. They support artists and writers working in the following disciplines: Poetry; Fiction and Creative Nonfiction; Photography and Filmmaking; and Painting, Sculpture, and Visual Arts.

Click here for the application / registration

Deadline: 23 Jan 2021

All applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and must be residents of New York State or Indian Nations therein ** (all counties). Residencies are for individual artists and writers. Saltonstall is unable to accommodate groups or pairs of people working together.

New in 2021: Accessibility space for an artist or writer! Saltonstall is currently building an accessible addition. It includes a private accessible living space with a roll-in shower, private accessible studio (for a visual artist or writer), shared accessible kitchen and dining area, accessible laundry facilities, and adjoining private suite for a personal care assistant if needed.

COVID, the unwanted guest

Saltonstall is under no illusions: The coronavirus will be with us — in some way — through next summer. They are planning a 2021 residency season because they believe they can offer a safe residency experience in a way that is responsible and responsive to the needs of artists and writers while protecting their health and that of the staff and local community.

2021 Saltonstall Residency Program Dates

Second annual six-night residency for artist/writer parents:

Thursday, June 3 – Wednesday, June 9. Please note: this residency is strictly for artist/writer parents who have at least one dependent child (under 18) at home.

Four-week residencies:

  • Monday, June 14 – Monday, July 12
  • Monday, July 19 – Monday, August 16
  • Monday, August 23 – Monday, September 20

Two-week residencies:

  • Monday, September 27 – Monday, October 11
  • Saturday, October 16 – Saturday, October 30

Residencies provide artists time and private space to do their work without interruption. During one month at Saltonstall, residents are often able to complete at least 3-4 months worth of work. The shorter, two-week residencies have an identical effect. There are minimal chores, and restricted visitor hours ~ all of which allows for maximum focus on the artists work.

There is no cost to attend Saltonstall and no application fee associated with this application. Additionally, to help offset travel to Ithaca and other personal expenses, they have increased their stipends to $750 for each month-long Fellow, $375 for each two-week Fellow, and $200 for each artist/writer attending the six-night residency for parents.

About Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts

Saltonstall is situated in a beautiful and inspiring setting of fields and wooded hills, approximately eight miles from downtown Ithaca.

A Saltonstall residency is a small community. They strive to provide a quiet, inviting, respectful, and nurturing community for creative individuals looking for uninterrupted time to focus on their craft. Each residency is comprised of just five individuals: one poet, one writer, one photographer or filmmaker, and two visual artists.

Saltonstall believes in and values a diverse community of creative individuals. To that end, they hope that all artists and writers feel welcome to apply for a residency, regardless of one’s level of education, experience, race, age, sex, religious belief, marital status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or national origin.

Cover Art (Ketchum, ID) – Call For Artists

Cover Art (Ketchum, ID) – Call For Artists

The City of Ketchum, Idaho, invites experienced artists to apply for a “Cover Art” public art project. Artwork by one selected artist will be transferred to vinyl and applied (wrapped) on three garage doors on the exterior of the Recreation Building at the City of Ketchum’s Atkinson Park. The intention of the project is to use public infrastructure as a canvas to enliven the community with art. The Recreation Building faces a heavily-used playground on the grounds of Hemingway STEAM School, a school for students in grades K–8, and the garage doors are seen by hundreds of playground and park users every day.

Click here for the application / registration

Deadline: 14 Jan 2021

The Cover Art Project began in 2012. During the inaugural year, the Ketchum Arts Commission (KAC) wrapped six utility boxes in four locations in the City of Ketchum. Since that time the city has added an additional 12 boxes to its Cover Art collection. Between 2014 and 2018, Ketchum, in collaboration with the Sun Valley Company, the US Forest Service, and the USDI Bureau of Land Management, wrapped three gondola cars on Bald Mountain. Cover Art projects in and around Ketchum continue to be very popular with area residents and visitors.

The selected artist will receive an artist fee of $1800. It is payable in two installments: $900 upon the City of Ketchum’s receipt of a signed artist contract; $900 upon installation of the final artwork onto the garage doors. Artist is responsible for all costs associated with photography of original artwork in preparation for transfer to vinyl wrap.

About The Ketchum Arts Commission

The Ketchum Arts Commission (KAC) was created by the City of Ketchum in 2007 with the objective of integrating arts and culture into the community’s life.

The KAC consists of local volunteers who are active in and passionate about the arts. Numerous other individuals donate time and services to help implement the KAC’s initiatives.

Ketchum is a diverse mountain resort community adjacent to the Sun Valley Resort. Sun Valley Resort is known as one of the country’s premier ski resorts noted for its European style terrain. Ketchum’s early roots were in mining and sheep herding. Today it is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities and its sophisticated arts and cultural offerings.

About CICA Museum

Started from the sculptor Czong Ho Kim’s studio in 1994, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (CICA) became a unique cultural space founded and cultivated by artists. Czong Ho Kim has designed and built the art complex with a distinctive style, consisting of five buildings in Gimpo, Korea. In the 1990s, Gimpo used to be a rural area famous for rice farming, which has now transformed into a satellite city of Seoul with a fast-growing population. Meanwhile, the area around CICA Museum has developed into an industrial complex.

While the city drastically transformed, Kim dedicated over 25 years of his life cultivating this art complex. Kim has considered living space as an extension of his art practice; therefore, many details from his architecture, including interweaving angles of windows, roofs, walls, and a restrained yet functional style of stair railings and facades, were designed and finished by him. Kim designed the CICA Garden, where you will find several on-site sculptures blended into the space. Unlike many modern architecture designed and built in a short period of time, this unique art complex bears 25 years of consistent endeavors of an individual artist and his team.

CICA Museum Exhibitions and Publications

Since 2014, CICA Museum has networked with over 4,000 international artists while organizing experimental publications and international exhibitions including the CICA international exhibition and publication on New Media Art, Art Yellow Book, and Artist Statement. To overcome uniform dissemination of contemporary art from the “center of art,” CICA aims to introduce local artists and cultures from different regions to global audiences and connect them with each other.

In 2017, CICA Museum formed the CICA New Media Art Conference (CICA NMAC) which has become an annual conference. For CICA NMAC, CICA Museum collaborated with Gimpo City in 2017, Anyang City Cultural and Art Foundation in 2018, and Seoul National University in 2019. CICA Museum organized “Art Teleported,” the Art Show and Conference for Nomad Artists, held in New York in 2019 and 2020. Through exhibitions, publications, conferences, and diverse experimental platforms, CICA hopes to create a global network among local artists, designers, audiences, and communities so that they can make, appreciate, and live in art in their regions and cultures.
