The d’Art Center in Norfolk, VA announces a call for artists for Strive, a national juried exhibition featuring art that highlights immigration in America and the long admired endeavor of obtaining the American dream. America was formed on immigrants seeking new opportunities, democracy, civil liberties, and religious and political freedom. The topic of immigration has been discussed in almost every news cast over the last two years. It continues to be at the center of much discussion and debate in the United States.

Strive will feature work that depicts various topics surrounding American immigration throughout American history and in today’s society. It spans from those who initially came to the United States seeking the American dream (and those who currently are in the process of doing so today) to refugees looking for a safe haven. This exhibition is open to all 2D, 3D, fine art, and fine crafts. It is open to all artists living in the United States. You do not have to be an immigrant to submit work to the exhibition. This exhibition will be juried by Solomon Isekeije and curated by d’Art Center Staff.
Juror biography: Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Solomon Isekeije studied fine arts at Obafemi Awolowo University in the country’s Osun State. He studied sculpture with Agbola Folarin, printmaking with Bruce Onobrakeya, and wood carving with Lamidi Fakeye. Isekeije graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1992 and obtained his M.F.A. degree from Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University in 2002 with specializations in printmaking and mixed media. He is currently head of Norfolk State University’s Art Department. Isekeije’s works of art have been shown in juried exhibitions worldwide including Daegu City, South Korea, where he received the Distinguished Arts Award, and Tokyo, Japan.
The d’Art Center is Norfolk’s thirty-year-old art center. It includes working professional artist studios and provides a wide variety of exhibitions and programming open to the public. The d’Art Center is located in the NEON district of Norfolk. Strive awards: 1st place: $500, 2nd place: $300, and 3rd place: $150.
About d’Art Center
As Norfolk’s art center, the d’Art Center proudly serves the greater Hampton Roads area by connecting the community with the visual arts. A non-profit 501c(3), d’Art offers art education, programming, outreach, and events. Many of which are free and open to the public. D’Art houses studios occupied by professional resident artists working in a variety of media including painting, glass, ceramics, printmaking, and fiber art. Resident artists provide free, interactive demonstrations for the public.
Celebrating thirty years in 2016, d’Art was founded in 1986 at the College Place location in downtown Norfolk. Modeled after the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, part of d’Art’s mission from the onset was to include working artists’ studios. In 2005, the d’Art Center relocated to the historic Selden Arcade, continuing a legacy as a vibrant arts organization. The d’Art Center remained at the Selden Arcade for the next ten years.
After the Selden Arcade suffered damage from an explosion in April 2015, the d’Art Center moved to the New Energy of Norfolk (NEON) Arts District. Currently across from the Chrysler Museum of Art, d’Art@Duke reopened to public in March 2016.

MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, announces a call for artists for their exhibitions 2020. This call represents MOXI’s second open application for artists and art collectives to propose works. For reference, recent artworks have incorporated elements such as Kinect-based body interaction, camera-based interaction, virtual reality, and augmented reality. As part of the exhibitions 2020 application process, artists are asked to submit a three paragraph exhibit proposal summary for either one or two exhibits. The summary can include up to two embedded images in the PDF. It should include an estimated total budget. Budgets can be up to $10,000, inclusive of all artist fees, travel, hardware, software fabrication, and installation costs. For the current application, budget detail is not required. Details of budget will come in the second phase.
The review committee will select artists that best meet the requirements based on the submitted information. The following criteria will be examined:
- Quality of the artist’s past work, both aesthetic and technical, as represented by the media submissions
- Experience of the artist in creating interactive artworks
- Experience of the artist in successfully designing, fabricating, and completing public artworks that are highly durable and robust – on time and within budget
- The artist’s training, education, and artist statement
- Quality of the proposed interactive exhibit and alignment with MOXI’s mission and audience

MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration and Innovation, opened in Santa Barbara, CA in early 2017. In its first year it welcomed over 175,000 visitors. The Paseo Water/Culture 2019 call is seeking artists to bring visibility to Northern New Mexico’s water culture and issues. Working with artists, Paseo wishes to create more inclusive and imaginative planning processes. They provide benefits to the community through artistic installations, designs, and educational opportunities. Paseo seeks proposals for installations to creatively expand public knowledge and appreciation of the acequia networks downtown Taos, NM. Selected art activations will vary in media, scale, and programming.

The goal is to highlight the acequia network for the benefit of the local community and wider audience of visitors traversing the downtown. These installations will be featured at the Paseo 2019 festival, September 13th and 14th, with the opportunity for pre- and post-installation capacities. All installations will be considered as an implementation for permanent installations.
Paseo will work closely with a number of partners to implement the Water/Culture 2019 including the Town of Taos, the Acequia Madre de Rio Pueblo, The Taos Valley Acequia Association, The NM Acequia Association, The Arts and Cultural District, Taos Mainstreet, The Taos Gallery Association, Taos Art Council, and a number of educational institutions and local businesses.
Local acequia and cultural leaders have become increasingly aware of and engaged in the water issues facing Taos. There is tremendous opportunity to utilize arts and culture strategies to advance sustainable, integrated, and inclusive management of the community’s water resources. As creative thinkers and doers, artists can be powerful partners to water leaders. Together, they re-imagine traditional approaches to water planning and management and connect with communities in new ways.
About Paseo
The Paseo is a festival dedicated to bringing the art of installation, performance, and projection to the streets of Taos, New Mexico. This two-day outdoor event, set in the high desert of Taos, New Mexico, is in its sixth year. It is scheduled for Friday and Saturday evening, September 13rd and 14th, 2019.
The Paseo seeks work that is immersive, participatory, and/or will make a dynamic impact within the Taos Historic District during this evening festival. The event is scheduled to start at sunset and runs to 11pm. Paseo 2018 brought over 6,000 people to the streets of Taos to experience this annual celebration.

Washington Printmakers Gallery announces a call for artists for the Small Works Exhibition. The City of Norwalk Parking Authority’s Maritime Garage Gallery is inviting submissions of art from artists 18 and over for its summer exhibit, Small Treasures. The exhibit will run from July 15 through October 5, 2019. The Maritime Garage Gallery’s Small Treasures exhibit is seeking works of art that are small in size but large on creativity. The height and width of the pieces must be no larger than 12 inches and no more than 5 inches in depth, including the frame. Clever uses of medium, with the exception of pedestal sculpture, are welcome. Nadia Martinez will be curating the exhibit.

The Maritime Garage Gallery is part of the Parking Authority’s “Art in Parking Places” placemaking initiative, an effort to support art in parking spaces. The gallery is located in the historic SoNo district of Norwalk, CT.
Small Treasures Artist Benefits
Chosen artists for Small Treasures will benefit from having their art exhibited in a gallery that is located in a highly trafficked public space. The Maritime Garage is located in historic South Norwalk. The Garage has between 500 and 700 cars going in and out daily, with an average of three passengers. This brings an estimated 1,500 – 2,100 daily impressions to the space. In addition, there will be an opening reception that will be attended by artists, Parking Authority representatives, area politicians, notables, and the public. The Gallery promotes the opening reception and exhibit in all local media outlets.
About Maritime Garage Gallery
The Maritime Garage Gallery was founded by the Norwalk Parking Authority as part of its Art in Parking Places initiative. This effort to support art in public spaces includes several permanent public art exhibits in the South Norwalk Railroad Station that highlight the city’s maritime tradition and other historical facts about town. These installations were made possible by a grant provided by the Federal transportation Enhancement Public Art Program. These initiatives are a collaboration of the Norwalk Parking Authority and the Norwalk Arts Commission. The Maritime Garage Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday. The Norwalk Parking Authority oversees the management, operation, facilities, and maintenance of over 4,000 on and off-street parking spaces.

4heads announces a call for artists for the 12th Annual Portal: Governors Island (formerly Governors Island Art Fair), New York’s largest independent exhibition. Portal will feature scores of artists of exceptional talent. Each will be awarded an exhibition room or large outdoor space in the historic and beautifully dilapidated buildings of Colonels Row. The lines between artwork and its environment are blurred across the lawns and landmark houses of bucolic Governors Island.

Because 4heads works hard to keep artists’ costs to a bare minimum, gallery scouts, journalists, and collectors know that this is where to find the freshest talent. The NY Times succinctly identified 4heads’ target audience with the headline, “Art Fair for the 99%”. They aim their 12th Annual Portal: Governors Island outreach to the public and artists alike. They are an economically and culturally diverse population of all ages as well as non-arts-going audiences. Portal:GI exhibitors are over 50% female, 35% non-white, and ages 14 to 89. Arts education outreach youth participants, who also show at Portal:GI, are 70% female and 80% non-white, including 85 children from AHRC NYC with developmental disabilities. Education program youth participants raise awareness for nonprofits including Lower East Side Girls Club, Chinatown Y, Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, and AHRC NYC, who serve children with developmental disabilities and K-12 youth from underserved communities.

Ann Arbor Art Center announces a call for artists for Odds and Ends, an exhibition of collage works. Referencing both classic and contemporary techniques, the exhibition surveys how traditions have evolved and celebrates the ways artists find to continually re-imagine materials. This exhibition welcomes artists that employ a range of collage techniques in any medium (2-D and 3-D). In addition to traditional paper collages, artists working in performance, sculpture, installation, ceramics, sound, and digital media are encouraged to submit work for consideration.

The Odds and Ends call for entry is open to any artist over the age of 18 who currently resides in the US. Artists are invited to submit up to three images per $35 entry in any combination of individual artwork or detail images. Artworks must have been created within the past three years and not previously shown in any other Ann Arbor Art Center exhibitions. There are no restrictions on artwork dimensions however artists are encouraged to review the gallery space diagram to help guide their submission.
The Odds and Ends jurying process is anonymous; however, artists must submit a bio and CV as separate .doc or .pdf documents. Label the files using the following format: Lastname_Firstname_Bio and Lastname_Firstname_CV. This is a juried exhibition and all entries must be submitted digitally for consideration. Submission does not guarantee artwork acceptance and submission fees are non-refundable. Submissions will not be accepted past the deadline.
Accepted artwork must arrive “ready to hang” – the Art Center reserves the right to decline artworks that do not meet gallery standards or do not represent artist submission. Artists are expected to provide components necessary for special/nontraditional installations. For shipped artwork, artists are responsible for all shipping costs and insurance, if applicable. It is preferable that artworks are for sale. The Art Center retains a 50% commission on all sold artwork.
Odds And Ends Juror: John Gutoskey
John Gutoskey is an artist, designer, printmaker, and collector. Early in his career, John worked as a costume designer and as a specialist in costume crafts, where he worked on productions in New York City and across the US in theater, opera, dance, film, and television. He taught classes in millinery, mask making, and fabric dyeing at the University of Michigan in the Department of Theater.
In the 1990‘s, John returned to his studio with a newfound interest in making art on his own terms. It resulted in an outpouring of new work. Exploring the media of assemblage (through found objects), collage, printmaking, and installation, he was inspired by the works of Joseph Cornell, Betye Saar, Lucas Samaras, outsider art, Art Brut, and religious art to evolve his own unmistakable style: a perfect mirror for his gregarious, highly animated personality. The obsessive collector in Gutoskey met the trained visual artist half-way.
John earned his BFA in theater design with a minor in sculpture from Webster University in St. Louis. He earned his MFA from the University of Michigan’s School of Art & Design where he studied printmaking & installation art, and also completed a certificate in LGBTQ Studies. John is the owner of JG Studio and the A2 Print Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
