“The process of painting is much more than recording the obvious. Simply put, my work is my personal interaction with and visual interpretation of a person or thing. The goal of which is to push past the surface of materials and technique used in the process of creating, in an effort to convey a personal vision. More than technique, it is how we as artists, interpret our own personal vision through our medium that elevates an ordinary subject into a work of art, one that resonates long after. I feel strongly in the versatility and flexibility of the medium and go to great lengths to push the medium in directions that may not be considered characteristic to traditional watercolor.” – Nancy Gaucher-Thomas

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] The Bristol Art Museum (BAM) announces a call for artists for a national juried exhibition focused on paper, Rock Paper Scissors.
This exhibition draws inspiration from the classic game, translating its playful rivalry into the realm of art. In the game, rock beats scissors, paper beats rock, and scissors beat paper. In this exhibition, paper takes center stage. This national call invites artists to explore materials and artistic processes that reflect the hard, composite, and delicate. Works may incorporate paper as a medium or subject and engage with broader themes of strength, fragility, and transformation. Playful experimentation and innovative approaches will unify the exhibit, welcoming all styles – from non-objective to abstracted realism.

Rock Paper Scissors – Artist Benefits
- Juried Selection by Esteemed Juror: The exhibition will be curated by Toby Sisson, a respected artist and educator with expertise in studio art. Toby Sisson earned her M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and is an Associate Professor and Director of the Studio Art Program at Clark University in Massachusetts. Having work juried by an esteemed professor and program director provides valuable exposure and enhances artists’ portfolios.
- Cash Awards: Participants will have a chance to win cash awards totaling $1000, recognizing artistic excellence and innovation.
- Publicity and Promotion: The exhibit will be promoted through various channels, offering participating artists additional exposure through the museum’s website, social media, press releases, and printed materials.

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] Bristol Art Museum announces a national call for artists for a juried exhibit featuring miniature art, Miniature Monumental.
For centuries, miniature artworks have been created around the world and across cultures dating back to prehistory. These little treasures take many forms, tend to be easily transported, and have been created from many materials. Miniatures can be mementoes of loved ones, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, drawings, original prints, etchings, stamps, sculptures, engraved gems, and even carved beads.
Unique and distinct among all other arts, the one common rule of thumb for miniature artworks is they can be held in the palm of the hand or measure less than 25 square inches in size. The artists’ style when creating miniatures can range from conventional to cutting-edge, limited only by the artist’s creativity.

The Museum’s intention is to create exhibits that place little burden on the artist. This call is for miniature works, 25 sq inches or less. All accepted works are required to be mailed vis US postal service making shipping more affordable for the artist.

The Miniature Monumental juror, Patricia Miranda is an artist, curator, and educator versed in many mediums, styles, and art trends. Her knowledge ranges from photography to non-traditional materials.
Miniature Monumental Artist Benefits
- The Museum will interview artists, either in person or via zoom video, and publish interviews on social media.
- Awards are in two forms: cash and art supplies from national art stores.
- The Museum takes no commission on any sales. The 2021 national exhibition sold approximately 12 works to collectors.
- Bristol Art Museum makes a purchase award to add to their collection.
About Bristol Art Museum
The Bristol Art Museum is a regional art museum dedicated to living artists. Founded in 1964, the Museum is the only nonprofit organization in Bristol, Rhode Island, with the exclusive mission dedicated to the visual arts and diverse contemporary artists. Located in historic downtown, the Museum is part of the notable property of Linden Place Mansion. The history of the property is connected to American slave trade. This motivates the Museum to create outreach programs and partnerships central to the goal of engaging diverse audiences of our time.
