Fragments Art Exhibition (Solomons, MD) – Call For Artists

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center announces a call for artists to submit original artwork to Fragments: Reflections On Memory, an art exhibition.

The Fragments exhibition seeks to explore how individual and collective memory can shape our identity and perception, influencing our understanding of the world around us. Whether through nostalgia, trauma, joy, or loss, memory intertwines with our daily lives and exists as a fluid, shifting narrative. AnnMariee Sculpture Garden and Arts Center challenges artists to explore the fragmented nature of memory, its fluidity, distortions, and how the passage of time affects our perception of the past and present.

Previous exhibitions have been juried by the Director of Collections at the Hirshhorn, the Director of Exhibitions at the National History Museum, and the Head Librarian at the Smithsonian American Art and Portrait Gallery Library.

Fragments: Artist Benefits

About Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center

Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center is committed to connecting people to art and nature. Through a wide variety of engaging exhibits, programs, classes, public projects, and annual events, the Center opens up opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and reflection. By providing opportunities for visitors to experience and engage in imaginative activities, the Center seeks to nurture the human spirit and contribute to a healthy society.

Management

The 30 acre grounds of Annmarie Sculpture Garden is owned and supported by the Board of Calvert County Commissioners. In accordance with the lease and management agreement, Annmarie is operated by the Koenig Private Foundation, a private, non-profit, charitable organization. The Foundation employes the staff of Annmarie, and seeks out grants and donations to support the payroll budget and fund special projects at Annmarie. The many activities and programs of Annmarie are supported by Ann’s Circle, Inc., a 501 c 3 non-profit organization whose board consists of residents drawn from the Southern Maryland community. Ann’s Circle offers a membership package with a variety of attractive benefits. Membership is open to all.

Funding

The thirty acre property that comprises Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is owned by the people of Calvert County and relies on the support of three entities for its operating budget, capital improvement budget, and events and programming budget. An annual grant from the Calvert County Commissioners to the Koenig Private Foundation supports the personnel budget. The Koenig Private Foundation and Ann’s Circle work together to raise funds to further support the payroll budget. The Foundation also helps raise funds for capital projects. Ann’s Circle manages the many programs, events, classes, exhibits, and activities of Annmarie, as well as the membership program and the gift shop. For additional information about this successfull, fifteen-year, collaborative partnership, please contact Stacey Hann-Ruff, the director of Annmarie at director@annmariegarden.org.

Construction of the award-winning Arts Building, which opened in 2008, was funded by five main sources: the State of Maryland, the Calvert County Commissioners, Friends of Annmarie Garden, the Koenig Private Foundation, and Ann’s Circle, Inc.

History

In 1991, Francis and Ann M. Koenig donated this property to Calvert County with the intention that it be developed into a sculpture garden. Over the next decade, their dream took shape as six works of art were installed on the thirty acre property. These diverse pieces are fully integrated into the natural setting of the Garden and provide the opportunity to develop an appreciation for the seasonal changes inherent in outdoor art. In addition to the sculpture, the walking paths were created and the allies, or hallways, were cleared. The lovely allies allow visitors to look across Annmarie and have created areas for the installation of sculpture.

In 2003, Annmarie became a member of the Smithsonian Institution’s Affiliations Program. This program has allowed the Garden to borrow more than twenty-five pieces of sculpture form the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden. In 2008, the Arts Building and the Studio School opened, allowing Annmarie to dramatically expand its programs and activities.

Monochrome (Online Photography Competition) – Call For Artists

Monochrome (Online Photography Competition) – Call For Artists

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] The New York Center for Photographic Art (NYC4PA) announces a call for artists for Monochrome, an online photography competition.

The first photographs to be part of the world of art were monochrome prints. The images were captured by large format cameras, developed into negatives, and printed in the darkroom. The world of photography has come a long way since then with color dominating so much of what we shoot, and cameras are now an integral part of our very portable phones. With so many color images around us, there is still something special about a monochrome print, whether it be black and white, sepia, or even shades of a single color. These are the images where all the emotion, texture, and beauty are expressed in gradations from light to dark.

Click here for the application / registration

Enter by: 15 December 2024

No matter if your original image was shot with tri x film, a digital SLR, or your phone, if the end product is a terrific monochrome image, it fits the call.

NYC4PA offers opportunities to participate in themed calls for photographers. Each call has a different theme and 50 images win. The prizes total $4000. There is a grand prize, 3 first prizes, 3 second prizes, 3 third prizes, 20 juror’s selections, and 20 honorable mentions. All 50 winners are posted in a gallery on the NYC4PA website and included in an exhibition gallery. The call is open to any photographers worldwide and of any age, amateurs or professional. A professional photographer, gallery owner, or photography teacher is the juror.

I am immensely grateful for my time at JTHAR. The program provides a gateway to an incredibly inspiring landscape while being embedded with an engaged and supportive community. From when I first arrived, to my last day, I felt valued and bolstered to a degree that far exceeded expectations. Personal connections coupled with an impressively outfitted living/working space made this bespoke residency truly special. The seven weeks of uninterrupted focused time allowed for the ample experimentation and iteration necessary for locating new possibilities in my creative research. I have immensely benefitted from the energy of all involved during the residency period and anticipate the momentum gained to carry me for years to come. — David Andree (2024)

The memories I made at the Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency will always hold a special place in my heart and mark a pivotal turning point in my artistic journey. The opportunity to spend time in the midst of such natural beauty allowed me to find inspiration, delve into my thoughts, and explore trajectories like never before. JTHAR’s generosity and dedication to fostering artistic growth are truly remarkable. — Justin M Zielke (2023)

Coming from the over populated landscape of New York City, it took me a while to adjust to the wide sky, to the desert’s prickly but fascinating creatures, the overwhelming daylight and the overwhelmingly dark nights, and the dry dry heat. But eventually, thanks to my fellow residents, and to the warmth and kindnesses of the JTHAR board members, Joshua Tree became the place I was able to feel myself again. My time there helped me reengage with my writing in a way I very much needed. It’s a bit counterintuitive perhaps, but the barbed landscape eventually proved itself capable of holding me tenderly. And so I let it. And for that gift, I’m immensely grateful. — Bernard Ferguson (2021)
