Submit your art that offers a unique glimpse into your imagination and allows viewers to see today’s world through your eyes, inspiring meaningful dialogue, spur thinking or simply allow us to dream. Submit 2D paintings, drawings, or illustrations in any style created in acrylic, watercolor, oil, pencil, gouache, pastel, ink, charcoal, or mixed media. No photography or digital art.
The juror, David Reuss, is a proud New York City native with over thirty years’ experience in illustration and fine art. His work encompasses an array of subjects, mediums, and clients. He is an award-winning member of the Salmagundi Club where he teaches painting and drawing. An Executive member of the Society of Illustrators, he currently serves as Membership Chair and Treasurer. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and earned his Master’s Degree in Arts and Cultural Management at Pratt Institute. “Strength is what appeals mostly to me in art. The work can be any medium, style, subject or size, however in the end the work must have power.”
Selected artists will have the opportunity to exhibit in an historic gallery facility that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The gallery has 11 foot ceilings and five large exhibit rooms, holding up to sixty works.

Smithtown Township Arts Council operates Mills Pond Gallery in an historic Greek Revival building built in 1838. There are Five gallery rooms and the facility can display an average of 60-70 works of art. Adaptation of Mills Pond House for public use has introduced modern mechanical systems to the structure without impairing its historic integrity. Gallery lighting and handicapped access have been designed to complement the original building. Notable among the ca. 1838 Grecian details are the gold-veined marble mantelpieces, ornamental plater “centres” applied to the ceilings, and front and rear stoops supported by wooden Doric columns.
Mills Pond house preserves the locality’s name, but departs from tradition in other respects. Its high-style Grecian design is unusual on Long Island and the hand of an accomplished architect is nearly unique at this early date. Pollard’s influence is seen in the use of imported materials: Albany boards, Carolina yellow pine, English glass, Connecticut stone, and Santo Domingan mahogany. The silvered hardware, decorative plaster, and carpeting were bought in New York City shops. William Wickham Mills died in 1865. His home descended in the family until its gift to the Town of Smithtown in 1976. Today, it is preserved for use as an arts-related facility.

The exhibition is open to oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic paintings. The subject matter is open and can range from portraiture to figurative or narrative subject matters.

Juror: Zimou Tan. This is an opportunity to have your work selected by an Art Renewal Center Associate Living Master Artist who has exhibited his work widely both nationally and internationally and has been a master teacher for over twenty years, teaching how to capture the essence and spirit of a subject and tell stories in art to communicate emotion.
Entrants will have the opportunity to win one of three awards – $1200 Best in Show, $800 Second Place, or $400 Third Place and be invited to a future winners exhibition. Besides being shown in the gallery, all selected artists will have their work shown on the Mills Pond Gallery website.

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] Mills Pond Gallery invites artists to submit works for Childhood Memories, a juried exhibition to be held April 22 – May 20, 2023.
Memories are often the inspiration for art. Artists give life to the characters and environments of our childhood memories, recording fragments of dreams, snippets of passing time, and experiences that have shaped our lives. This call asks artists to explore childhood memories – early rituals, rites of passage, and innocence of early life experiences that celebrate the passionate world of childhood. Examples include childhood memories pertaining to a specific event or experience that has previously occurred. For example, recollection of an episode among friends or family members in a specific time (holidays), places (school), and/or and memories of the associated emotions of the event.

Entries will be judged on the originality and insight with which they embody this theme visually. Painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, photography, and printmaking will be considered. No digital art, manipulated photography, or video.

The theme is poet Emily Dickinson’s phrase: “Memory is a strange Bell—Jubilee, and Knell.” The exhibition is open to multiple responses to the metaphor: a bell that summons the public to a joyous celebration or rings mournfully to signal loss.

For Visualizing the Past, artists may explore the role of remembrance—from personal reflections to universal emotions—through abstract, representational, or mixed modalities. Visual evocations of past events, landscapes, people, scenes, objects, or structures can make intangible thoughts, emotions, and concepts visible to the mind’s eye. Images that preserve the past can retard decay and disappearance. Conversely, they could give form to the inevitable ravages of time.
Whether invoking the highs or lows of cultural memory, artists can suggest what remains after a physical presence, event, or emotion has vanished. The exhibition is open to varied interpretations of the subject, from literal or narrative-inspired to far-ranging or symbolic. Representational images of remembered sights, activities, impressions, or atmosphere as well as surrealistic or abstract evocations related to the subject are welcome. Expressions may range from positive images to more melancholy soundings.

Since 1978, the Council has made its home in the historic Mills Pond House. Occupied by the prosperous Mills family (early settlers of the Town of Smithtown) until 1976, this area is a rare survival of an agricultural hamlet once common on Long Island. William Wickham Mills (a man of wealth and social prominence) inherited the family land and began to construct the Mills Pond House in 1838. This Greek Revival style home is the earliest documented architect-designed house in the area.

Mills Pond Gallery invites artists to submit works for a juried contemporary realism exhibition to be held September 12 – October 17, 2020. Juror: Max Ginsburg. Only oil paintings will be considered in this call for submissions. The subject matter is open and can include portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Paintings should be representational, ranging from impressionistic in style to highly rendered paintings.

Max Ginsburg’s paintings are in many prominent collections including The Butler Institute of American Art, The New Britain Museum, The Washington County Museum, The Society of Illustrators Museum, The Salmagundi Club, The Art Renewal Center (ARC), and The Martin Luther King Labor Center.
The alla prima painter is praised for his political and social commentaries bringing to life on canvas the struggles of everyday people in his New York City home. His fine art has been exhibited widely. It has received countless major awards among them The Portrait Society of America Competition (William Draper Grand Prize) and The Art Renewal Center (International Salon Competition- Best in Show).
Ginsburg enjoyed a successful twenty-four year career in illustration, retiring from the field in 2004 to concentrate again on his fine art. The artist has taught art for 60 years and offers workshops around the country and abroad in his commitment to inspire today’s artists to master realism painting.
