India Book Arts Tour 2020–21 (India) – Call For Artists

Book Arts Tours announces open registration for the India Book Arts Tour 2020-21. This intimate look into India is for those who wish to see behind the scenes of various working artists and craftspeople. Augmenting visits to art and craft centers, museums, studio visits, and workshops, participants will have a chance to observe traditional wood block carving and printing on cloth, experience in natural dyeing, a visit to a miniature painter’s studio and engage in traditional, and modern papermaking methods. Additionally, visit world renowned architectural treasures like the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort to immerse into the aesthetic landscape of India.

Full Tour Registration: approximately 3,500–4,000 USD for 15 nights. Final cost depends on number of participants.

​Registration fee includes transport between cities and venues, accommodations, entrance fees to museums and historical sites, workshop fees, and most meals.

India Book Arts Tour 2020–21 Artist Benefits

If you are an artist interested in the arts, textiles, culture, architecture, food, and history, this tour is for you. It is curated according to the needs of the group although the focus is arts and culture. Visit artist studios; take workshops like palm leaf binding, papermaking, and wood block carving taught by traditional craftspeople; watch demonstrations; visit architectural wonders; and experience the rich craft and cultural traditions India has to offer.

This tour offers you an in-depth look into India, one not normally seen.

The tour is being led by Radha Pandey and Johan Solberg.

About Book Arts Tours

Radha Pandey is a papermaker and letterpress printer. She earned her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she was a recipient of the Iowa Arts Fellowship. She has taught Western, Eastern, and Islamic-world Papermaking techniques with Timothy Barrett and teaches book arts classes in India, Europe, and the U.S.

Johan Solberg is a fine binder with a passion for both contemporary and historical binding structures. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa Centre for the Book. Solberg is deeply passionate about Japanese papermaking, and studied the ancient craft in Japan as an intern. He has undertaken research trips to Uzbekistan and India to learn more about the history of papermaking there.
