This is an extraordinarily artist-friendly fair. The downtown street provides awnings under which new and emerging artists who have not yet invested in a tent can display their artworks. Volunteers can help unload and load vehicles, provide water all day on both days, and provide time for bathroom breaks. The Tall Grass Board of Directors serves breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, snacks at mid-day on Saturday, and a scrumptious dinner Saturday night along with an awards ceremony.

Prizes are awarded in the areas of 1-dimensional art, 2-dimensional art, and jewelry as well as two judges’ choice awards and a peoples’ choice award.

There is a music fest on Saturday hosted by the Village of Park Forest. It features latin, jazz, rock, and blues. Along the sidewalk in front of the Tall Grass Arts Association Gallery, the “Kids Art Alley” includes many art activities for young children such as painting, face-painting, and several craft projects. Food trucks and local food vendors are on site for lunch and snacks.

The Tall Grass Arts Association Gallery will be open during the fair and will feature the Annual Gallery Artists’ exhibit. The gallery and art fair are open to the public free of charge.

I want to thank you and all the wonderful volunteers for putting on the Tall Grass Art Fair! You all do such a beautiful job of creating an atmosphere of community. That, more than anything, brings me back each year! – Ellen Grenier Bevill

To all the wonderful people who worked so hard to put together such a great art fair; I have always thought that you, at Tall Grass, accommodate the vendors most thoughtfully. Tall Grass art fair is a wonderful experience for participating artists, art aficionados and the Park Forest community. – Sue Wade

The Park Forest Art Fair was simply amazing. I have never experienced an art fair such as this before. The attention and support given to the artists made one feel like royalty. I enjoyed the breakfast and was more than grateful for the spread that was laid before us for dinner. The award ceremony left me speechless. I have never experienced that level of appreciation for vendors at an Art Fair before. Wow!!! Is all I can say. I enjoy meeting the other artists. Their work floored me. The kind spirit of the artists and the staff was felt throughout the weekend. I am more than satisfied with my sales. – Tara McGee

Greek Island Residency (Skopelos, Greece) – Call For Artists

Greek Island Residency (Skopelos, Greece) – Call For Artists

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts (SkopArt) located on the Greek Island of Skopelos announces a call for artists for the Greek Island Residency for 2024. Residency studios are equipped for painters, printmakers, ceramicists, and sculptors and are for three weeks from April – October. Perched high above the Aegean Sea, find a welcome respite from the hurly-burly world. Feel freedom to work in the only studio that offers most mediums in Greece. Experience the food, history, landscape, music, and welcoming people of the island.

Apply by: 20 March 2023

The Greek Island Residency has much to offer all ages and needs. A younger artist may need to boost their resume. Another may be working on a deadline for a project and require the time to work alone and concentrate on it. Others may need time away from their culture and environment to find a different form of inspiration. Some bring friends or families so they may spend their free time in other pursuits. Others enjoy the exchanges that occur with artists working in the studio in different mediums or the same medium.

The journey to the island on ferry presents all residents with a 3-hour experience that is relaxing to the spirit and visually exciting as one leaves the shore and first arrives at the Port of Skiathos. It then continues for another hour to the Port of Skopelos. The quaint villages with red tile and slate roofs dot the mountains. The lush pine forests of Skopelos are in view. The coves and beaches tucked away from full view stir the imagination and call for exploration. The staff at Skopelos wishes the residents to find freedom to explore, experiment, and expand their artistic expressions.

Greek Island Residency Artist Benefits

SkopArt hopes that the residency will allow the artists to network with other talented artists, learn about a new culture, and enjoy down time from their busy lives. They allow first time residents so SkopArt can be a springboard to other residencies. Many artists have breakthroughs in their work because they have the time to think about new ideas. The island is incredibly inspiring with the gorgeous pine tree forests that go all the way down to the deep blue Aegean Sea. It is a safe environment so artists can walk freely through charming and quaint Skopelos town day or night.

About Skopelos Foundation for the Arts

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts was established as a non-profit organization in 1999 by the Founder, Gloria Carr. For years, it was her vision to create a studio for artists. She wasn’t sure where it would be set up until 1996 when she visited the island of Skopelos.

Skopelos is a unique island with the contrast of light and color. It is the greenest island located in the Northern Sporades. The locals add to the extraordinary flavor of the island and this is where Gloria Carr decided to create a studio.

The mission of the Foundation is to promote the visual arts and education in the arts through cultural exchanges. Guided by the Hellenic history and culture, the Foundation promotes artistic dialogue between the Greek, American, and International communities of artists.

The ceramics area is open raw space with a gorgeous view of the neighboring island, Alonnisos. There are two electric kilns, two wheels on site, and a wood-burning kiln. The Foundation is affiliated with Nikos Rodios, who is a world-renowned potter and known for his patented firing technique that creates a beautiful onyx that he applies to his work modeled after ancient utilitarian pieces.

The printmaking facilities overlook the Aegean Sea, with lots of windows so that the artists always see the light and the constantly changing colors of the water. The studio has equipment so it can accommodate the beginner to the most advanced.

The Foundation has a Board of Directors which is made up of businesspeople, artists, and university professors from Florida, Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC. It is affiliated with some of the top Universities including Arizona State University, George Mason University, Gulf Coast College, Marymount University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Corcoran School of Art + Design, Pratt Institute, The University of Florida, and Michigan School of Art + Design. The Foundation has worked with top workshop directors such as Pavel Amromin, Steve Cushner, Georgia Deal, Linda Goodman, Kathleen King, Mitch Lyons, Tammy Marinuzzi, Dennis O’Neil, and Suzy Birstein.

Skopelos is a place that takes the imagination beyond what one thinks is possible if you allow it. It is for the flexible adventurer that wants to create and be engulfed by the Greek culture. If you want to have an experience you will never forget, come work on your own or in one of the workshops.

About Mills Pond Gallery

Smithtown Township Arts Council operates Mills Pond Gallery in an historic Greek Revival building built in 1838. There are five gallery rooms and the facility can display an average of 60 works of art.

Adaptation of Mills Pond House for public use has introduced modern mechanical systems to the structure without impairing its historic integrity. Gallery lighting and handicapped access have been designed to complement the original building. Notable among the circa 1838 Grecian details are the gold-veined marble mantelpieces, ornamental plater “centres” applied to the ceilings, and front and rear stoops supported by wooden Doric columns.

Mills Pond house preserves the locality’s name, but departs from tradition in other respects. Its high-style Grecian design is unusual on Long Island and the hand of an accomplished architect is nearly unique at this early date. Pollard’s influence is seen in the use of imported materials: Albany boards, Carolina yellow pine, English glass, Connecticut stone, and Santo Domingan mahogany. The silvered hardware, decorative plaster, and carpeting were bought in New York City shops. William Wickham Mills died in 1865. His home descended in the family until its gift to the Town of Smithtown in 1976. Today, it is preserved for use as an arts-related facility.

Las Laguna Art Gallery is a contemporary and fine art gallery that features art from a diverse group of artists, representing a variety of mediums. They are dedicated to the exploration and engagement of contemporary and fine art visual culture through unique collaborations between artists, students, and the community. They make it a point to curate artwork that is interesting and engaging to the art collector, lover, and novice. Unlike most art galleries located in Laguna Beach, the gallery accepts work from artists outside of Laguna Beach. Since 2013, Las Laguna Gallery has held open calls for art, calls for entry, and calls for art opportunities for artists to promote and sell their art in a gallery. Each month they have a themed exhibition and works are promoted in the gallery, online, and to an extensive client list.

Quickly becoming one of the premier contemporary and fine art galleries in Laguna Beach, California; Las Laguna Gallery is dedicated to the exploration and engagement of contemporary and fine art visual culture – regionally, nationally, and internationally; through unique collaborations between artists, students, and the community.

Las Laguna Gallery is located on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Village. Laguna Village is an artist alcove on the cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This location is a must stop location with artist galleries and jewelry shops. The location features a restaurant, bar, and there is live music in the fire-side theater Tuesday through Saturday. The gallery is one of only three locations in Laguna Beach that offers an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. It is a desired destination for art, live music, and food.

With more than 100 art galleries and artist studios to explore, you’ll come to understand why Laguna Beach is a beloved “art colony.” In fact, the area was discovered by artists. In the late 1800s, visitors were making an annual pilgrimage through the canyons to camp at Laguna Beach each summer. By 1903, painters like Norman St Clair were visiting from San Francisco, attracted to the landscape and light only found on the coast of Laguna. Like tourists of any era, St Clair returned home with glowing reports and landscape paintings that led his artist friends to follow him south. It wasn’t long before plein air (painting outdoors) artists like William Wendt and Frank Cuprien moved to Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach is now a world class art destination with multiple art events held throughout the year.
