Founded in 1879, the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts is the largest and longest established body of practicing visual artists in Northern Ireland. One of its founding principles was to hold an annual exhibition of work by both members and non–members of merit. Now in its 138th year, this event remains one of the highlights of the Northern Irish arts calendar. The 138th Annual Exhibition will be on show at the Ulster Museum from 18th October 2019 to 5th January 2020.

The Field Kitchen Academy is an interdisciplinary educational residency programme that gathers artists/ creative minds, a resident chef, and prominent experts from different fields together around a kitchen table through mind-opening acts and actions.

A total of ten residents will be accepted to join the upcoming Field Kitchen Academy in its two modules. Curated by Ece Pazarbaşı under the title of Silence with the Consent of Sound, residents will use the notion of silence in sound as a gateway to opening various sensory experiences. Residents will experiment towards transgressing the well-accustomed idea that silence, as used as a “sound” component in sound art and music, creates an aspect of empowering the work itself by making it stronger. Use of silence can accentuate the other frequencies. At the same time, sound might accentuate the silence further. Silence in sound creates a passage to other senses of the body. With silence, the journey with sound enables quick shifts and glitches from auditory senses to the enhanced senses of sight, touch, smell, and taste.
Composed of two intertwined modules, the educational residency offers ten residents through applications from artists, chefs, and other creative minds to address these issues.
The ten selected residents will have the opportunity of pursuing processes of experimentation, discussion, trial and error, the progression of knowledge, and know-how in working sessions during the first three weeks. The last half week will be the ‘simmering’ period where the residents are expected to do Nothing.
The selection process will be pursued by a jury including Mario Asef, Ursula Block, Cevdet Erek, Brandon Labelle, and Ece Pazarbaşı.

Fontys announces a call for artists for the Master Performing Public Space, a new one-year Master program inviting international artists from all disciplines for the 2019/20 intake. In this program, artists focus on public space as their artistic environment together with an international community of artists and researchers. This new Master offers an enriching and flexible research environment which directly relates to the artist’s current artistic work in public space.

Master Performing Public Space Program
This Master focuses strongly on building an international learning environment based on a like-minded and ambitious group of creatives. They seek to strengthen their international arts network and analyze the versatile facets of public space. An artistic mind will be refined as a consequence of breaking down barriers. It will become more developed via interaction with people from other cultures, backgrounds, and artistic disciplines.
Combining or interacting with other artistic forms is an interesting way to improve one’s understanding of artistic form. The best artists will typically be those with a wide appreciation. This appreciation naturally comes as a consequence of interacting with like-minded but fundamentally different people. A problem solved by students originating from different cultures, which this Master not only supports, but also actively encourages.
Combining an interdisciplinary range of approaches including critical theory and other modes of analysis with an equally diverse range of research methods, the program offers creatives the opportunity to explore the impact of producing work in public space.
So defined is the course’s approach to flexibility and forward-thinking, it is designed for creatives from a variety of art disciplines. Creatives with a background in theatre, dance, circus, music, fine arts, architecture, digital arts, and graphic design are welcome to join this program. In fact, graduates of all art disciplines will be considered for this Masters course.
The full-time blended learning program combines online and on-site learning. While the program lasts one year, the majority of study will occur online via an online learning platform. While working on individual projects in your home country, you will have access to the 24/7 online platform for intensive research and creative dialogue with your peers and mentors.
Master Performing Public Space Bootcamps
In addition, successful applicants will be invited to join on-site intensive ‘Bootcamps’, in the Netherlands. Three occasions per year (two weeks each, for a total of six-weeks). In order to enrich interaction and to expose students to a variety of working methods, the Bootcamps, held in Tilburg, provide the necessary setting and hands-on approach to investigate, develop, and test work in the field – the public space.
An experienced team of teachers, creative leaders, distinguished visiting artists, and partner organizations will provide the necessary cross-disciplinary support, knowledge, and guidance throughout the program. The teaching methods are designed to be highly adaptable. Students will be asked to actively engage with the program’s community. They will co-shape the content of the program to their individual needs.

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts (SkopArt) located on the Greek Island of Skopelos is offering artist residencies for 2019. Greek Island Residency studios are equipped for painters, printmakers, ceramicists, digital photographers, and videographers. Residencies are from two to four weeks from April-October. A Greek Island Residency has much to offer all ages and needs. A younger artist may need to boost their resume. Another may be working on a deadline for a project and require the time to work alone and concentrate on their project. Others enjoy the exchanges that occur with artists working in the studio in different mediums or sometimes the same medium.
The journey to the island on the hydrofoil or ferry presents all residents with a 2-1/2 hour experience that is relaxing to the spirit and visually exciting as one leaves the shore and first arrives at the Port of Skiathos. It then continues for another hour to the Port of Skopelos. The quaint villages with red tile and slate roofs dot the mountains. The lush pine forests of Skopelos are in view. The coves and beaches tucked away from full view stir the imagination and call for exploration. The Skopelos staff will greet residents at the port and make sure their needs are provided as they make their way the short distance to their lodgings and the studio. The staff at Skopelos wishes the residents to find freedom to explore, experiment, and expand their artistic expressions.
Greek Island Residency Artist Benefits
A workshop is offered in painting, drawing, printmaking, and book arts on July 8-20, 2019. It is designed for all levels. The workshop begins in the historic Plaka district in Athens then continues to Skopelos Island. The instructors, Beth Curren, Carolee Jakes, and Cindy Tidler, are accomplished artists from the Washington, DC area. They have been resident artists at The Skopelos Foundation in past years. SkopArt’s location on a Greek Island midway between Athens and Thessaloniki in the Aegean Sea is called the green island because of the lush pine forests that meet the sea and natural springs that they say come from Mount Olympus. In spring, the pastures are awash with a varied palette of wildflowers. Goats and sheep graze on the mountains. Valleys are dotted with grapes and olive trees. Winter can be harsh with fierce winds. Some years, snow is heavy and welcome rains that replenish the water supply.
People have inhabited the island from around 2800-2000 B.C. On the area of Sendouka are found what look to be chiselled graves from what is said to be neolithic times but this is argued. Myths flourish from those times and continue today with all sorts of ways to do things especially to keep the evil eye away. Through the ages pirates, Romans, and Venetians often plundered the island until Turkish rule, though there was never a Turkish settlement on the island. Roman and Venetian ruins can still be found. In the 1960s, the state supported the development of the neighboring island of Skiathos, but it was left alone. In the 1980s, the town came under an order of preservation which has kept the village unchanged and is of extraordinary beauty.

Reshape proposes an open and inclusive experimental process with professionals from the Europe and the Mediterranean to enhance their innovative practices and help transforming the entire arts ecosystem.
Political, economic, technological, and ecological changes in society deeply influence the way in which arts are created, presented, and experienced. Not all artists have the same opportunities to present or collaborate internationally. Public policies, industry practices, and the market cannot ensure that diverse artistic voices and practices reach potential audiences across Europe. At the same time, artists work more and more across aesthetics, disciplines, national boundaries, and sectors. The institutional not-for-profit arts sector – both on the national and European levels – hasn’t been flexible enough to integrate these changes.
How can the arts sector continue to be supported within this context? Reshape partners are convinced that artists and cultural workers are innovation experts. They are the ones who should invent future models for the arts sector. There are many innovative models and projects created by arts professionals around Europe and South Mediterranean who, eager to stay true to their values, experiment with different ways of engaging audiences, and connecting with other social sectors. These often fragile and unconnected projects are ‘weak signals’ of potential future models.
Reshape 2019 is looking for such artistic initiatives, providing it with time and space to be further developed in a transnational and transregional context. (Re)imagine new models of organizing the arts sector. Reshape will support existing initiatives and projects experimenting with innovative models, creating an opportunity for artists and cultural workers to meet and exchange ideas. Concretely, it will devise five sustainable and innovative prototypes to five research themes posed below.

- Art and citizenship – How can art better support practicing citizenship together?
- Fair governance models – How to make open, inclusive and flexible governance models?
- Value of art in social fabric – How to encourage understanding of and promote the value of art in social fabric?
- Solidarity funding – How can solidarity funding encourage the vitality of contemporary arts in these uncertain times?
- Transnational / postnational artistic practices – What framework and tools do artists working transnationally need and how to provide them?
Explore these five topics in the following way:
- Directory – mapping existing experimental practices in Europe and the South Mediterranean.
- Forum – the meeting of artists and cultural workers encouraging discussion and reflection on alternative practices.
- Trajectory Groups – each group gathered around one of the five above mentioned topics. In total fifty artists and cultural workers propose new models, strategies, and tools via workshops and remote work.
- Intensives – all participating artists and other professionals gather in two inspirational meetings to discuss and compare emerging ideas.
- Conference – participants share the process and result with broader arts and culture community.
- Publications – a collection of publications that raise important questions and share the results of the Reshape project.

The aim of Reshape is to imagine an alternative to the European arts ecosystem. It will do so by rethinking its instruments and collaborative models, placing them in line with artistic and social innovation and the principles of fairness, solidarity, geographic balance and sustainability. Reshape will develop and test an experimental bottom-up method. It will construct new narratives and new instruments that are appropriate to the evolutions of the arts sector and the society. By increasing the knowledge, competences, and reactivity of intermediary organisations in relation to today’s artistic experimentations, Reshape aims to influence public policies and integrate future policy instruments.

Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery and the Kent Medway National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) Partnership are seeking to commission a new digital artwork to be accessioned as a permanent artifact within their collections. This ambitious new commission will respond to the NPO partners’ museums and their contents as well as address broader themes of collecting and exhibiting physical and digital artworks within a museum context.

New Digital Artwork Artist Benefits
This commission is for the value of £15,000 (inclusive of VAT). This amount is to cover artists’ fees; research, development, and expenses; all digital and physical production costs, services, and hardware and software; and transport and installation.
Payment will be made in 4 equal installments:
