With more than 100 art galleries and artist studios to explore, you’ll come to understand why Laguna Beach is a beloved “art colony.” In fact, the area was discovered by artists. In the late 1800s, visitors were making an annual pilgrimage through the canyons to camp at Laguna Beach each summer. By 1903, painters like Norman St Clair were visiting from San Francisco, attracted to the landscape and light only found on the coast of Laguna. Like tourists of any era, St Clair returned home with glowing reports and landscape paintings that led his artist friends to follow him south. It wasn’t long before plein air (painting outdoors) artists like William Wendt and Frank Cuprien moved to Laguna Beach. Within a few years, Laguna Beach had a permanent population of about 300 people – half of whom were artists.

The Greek Island Residency has much to offer all ages and needs. A younger artist may need to boost their resume. Another may be working on a deadline for a project and require the time to work alone and concentrate on it. Others may need time away from their culture and environment to find a different form of inspiration. Some bring friends or families so they may spend their free time in other pursuits. Others enjoy the exchanges that occur with artists working in the studio in different mediums or the same medium.
The journey to the island on ferry presents all residents with a 3-hour experience that is relaxing to the spirit and visually exciting as one leaves the shore and first arrives at the Port of Skiathos. It then continues for another hour to the Port of Skopelos. The quaint villages with red tile and slate roofs dot the mountains. The lush pine forests of Skopelos are in view. The coves and beaches tucked away from full view stir the imagination and call for exploration. The staff at Skopelos wishes the residents to find freedom to explore, experiment, and expand their artistic expressions.

SkopArt hopes that the residency will allow the artists to network with other talented artists, learn about a new culture, and enjoy down time from their busy lives. About Skopelos Foundation for the Arts
The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts was established as a non-profit organization in 1999 by the Founder, Gloria Carr. For years, it was her vision to create a studio for artists. She wasn’t sure where it would be set up until 1996 when she visited the island of Skopelos.
Skopelos is a unique island with the contrast of light and color. It is the greenest island located in the Northern Sporades. The locals add to the extraordinary flavor of the island and this is where Gloria Carr decided to create a studio.
The mission of the Foundation is to promote the visual arts and education in the arts through cultural exchanges. Guided by the Hellenic history and culture, the Foundation promotes artistic dialogue between the Greek, American, and International communities of artists.
The ceramics area is open raw space with a gorgeous view of the neighboring island, Alonnisos. There are two electric kilns, two wheels on site, and a wood-burning kiln. The Foundation is affiliated with Nikos Rodios, who is a world-renowned potter and known for his patented firing technique that creates a beautiful onyx that he applies to his work modeled after ancient utilitarian pieces.
The printmaking facilities overlook the Aegean Sea, with lots of windows so that the artists always see the light and the constantly changing colors of the water. The studio has equipment so it can accommodate the beginner to the most advanced.
The Foundation has a Board of Directors which is made up of businesspeople, artists, and university professors from Florida, Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC. It is affiliated with some of the top Universities including Arizona State University, George Mason University, Gulf Coast College, Marymount University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Corcoran School of Art + Design, Pratt Institute, The University of Florida, and Michigan School of Art + Design. The Foundation has worked with top workshop directors such as Pavel Amromin, Steve Cushner, Georgia Deal, Linda Goodman, Kathleen King, Mitch Lyons, Tammy Marinuzzi, Dennis O’Neil, and Suzy Birstein.

I have to say your exposition is really impressive. At first when I saw your open calls I didn’t think it would be a virtual environment but I was surprised. Your virtual environment shows you pay attention to detail, it’s not just the room itself, it has assets and makes it feel like a real space you would contemplate art, lights above the paintings, benchs, little plant pots, windows and open spaces, even fire extinguishers were added to the mockup, all that makes it feels like a safe space. I also really liked the way you organized your artists, they seem to complement each other and a lot of rooms had cohesion in style even if the whole exposition had variety. A lot of different levels of technic and different mediums too which allows a lot of artists to expand and grow no matter the stage, overall a lot of diversity but still consistent. It made me feel included in the art world, and sometimes as a young artist you don’t know how to seek that without feeling overwhelmed. This was a nice choice. It was really nice participating in The Art Of Self Regulation, it gave me a very nice experience for my first exposition even if online, and a somewhat similar feeling to what it’s to participate in a collective one. Right now, there is a surge of independent creatives wanting to do it themselves. The D.I.Y wave is probably the right term to use. Yet we can only get so far when we do it ourselves, trust me, I know, this is when collectives like the Holy Art become essential. Not only have they built a collective from the ground up, starting with facilitating virtual exhibitions for hundreds and hundreds of aspiring and emerging artists but they have created a platform for others to be seen, heard, and appreciated, three things we creatives want. The effort placed into what they are doing is not shallow, there is a real depth in wanting to display the works of creatives that are not being given the light of day. Something we do not see in the creative industry. They are not hard to reach, truly an email away from beginning your creative endeavour and I highly recommend you doing so. – Jaffar Aly
The NOSTALGIA exhibition was the first virtual show I participated in. Before that the very idea of showcasing my tactile textile art pieces in a digital space was absolutely abhorrent to me. However, the superb Holy Art team completely changed my view on it. The exhibitions are curated with so much care and the translation of a physical gallery space into a virtual one is done with great love to detail. I am glad I submitted my work and am grateful for the opportunity I was given be able to introduce my art to a broad, completely new and international audience I would not have reached with a physical show. I had a very good experience participating in the open call for virtual exhibitions. As a self-taught artist, it can be difficult to get an early show because you don’t have a connection to the art world, but THE HOLY ART is equally welcoming. The quality of the virtual exhibitions is excellent, and the promotion on SNS shows a very positive atmosphere at the gallery. Having recently set myself up on Instagram as a platform to promote my work, I stumbled across The Holy Art whilst searching for open call and gallery opportunities. What initially grabbed my attention was their minimalist website and IG page which allowed the art to stand out. Since I first approached them in May 2021 I have been lucky enough to be chosen to feature in several of their virtual and physical exhibitions; Symphonia, Utopia, Revolution, and Cosmosis. From the start, I was very impressed with their professional and friendly nature. They know how to engage with artists and are quick to respond to any communication. Their promotional materials are sent out in good time and they will promote exhibitions and individual artists as promised on social media. I think online exhibition is a very convenient and good way to display artist works. You can see different works from anywhere and at any time. You can watch each author’s unique interpretation over and over again I guess this is the best way in this situation. – Zhang Fan

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) announces a call for artists for the Public Art Mural Grant, a four-week residency in which an artist will create an original work for WSW’s mural wall. The mural space at Women’s Studio Workshop faces the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail (WVRT), which is an active outdoor public trail used primarily for walking, running, and cycling. The mural space is 10′ x 23.5′ and overlooks a new, ADA accessible patio and community gathering area.

No application entry fee for the Public Art Mural Grant residency.
The grant includes a stipend of $350/week, $500 for materials, $250 for travel, and free on-campus housing. Applicants should keep in mind all COVID-19 related travel stipulations. WSW artistic staff will be available for technical and material support throughout the residency. WSW estimates that approximately 3,000-5,000 WVRT users pass by the facilities on a monthly basis, many coming onto the campus to view the current mural or inquire about the organization.
