North Benton Street Mural (Woodstock, IL) – Call For Artists

North Benton Street Mural (Woodstock, IL) – Call For Artists

[Sponsored Listing] The City of Woodstock, Illinois, seeks artists’ proposals for the North Benton Street Mural as part of an outdoor dining and entertainment area in its historic downtown district. The commissioning of a new mural in the historic district is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to give residents and visitors opportunities to engage with the arts.

The mural will be attached to the exterior, west-facing facade of a privately owned building at 220 North Benton Street. The proposed mural site is located on a street adjacent to the historic Woodstock Square and within the historic district. During summer months, the street is closed to vehicular traffic. It is used as an outdoor dining and entertainment space by several nearby restaurants. The site has high visibility and a significant amount of pedestrian traffic.

Residents and visitors come to the historic Woodstock Square to attend performances at the Woodstock Opera House and private music and movie venues, as well as numerous special events throughout the year. The award-winning Woodstock Farmers Market, locally owned shops, and popular bars and restaurants attract people to the Woodstock Square in large numbers.

  • Design submissions: By March 25, 2022
  • Mural agreement available: By April 15, 2022
  • Project completed: By July 15, 2022

There is no submission fee. Artists may submit more than one proposed concept. Designs must be the artist’s own work and must not violate any copyright restrictions. Any artist with previous mural design and installation experience is eligible to submit a proposal. All correspondence and contracts are part of the public record. By submitting materials you are (1) consenting to the release of those materials by the City in response to requests under the Public Records Act and (2) agreeing to indemnify and hold harmless the City for release of such information.

Artists shall submit the following for consideration:

  • Artist Application
  • Resume
  • Link to portfolio
  • One to two paragraph narrative describing design concept, including substrate
  • Reference

City staff will review applications for completeness and eligibility. The City Council will determine final project award and contract terms. Designs may also be subject to review by the City’s Historic Preservation Commission and the City’s Arts Commission. After review by an art advisory group, finalists will be selected and notified to submit a full-color design for consideration. A $500 design fee will be paid to those artists not chosen as the finalist.

  • Documented experience of the artist in completing similar projects

The mural will be mounted to the west-facing brick façade of a historic building. The space available for the mural is approximately 30 feet by 12 feet. Permission from the building owner has been secured. It is clean and in good condition for an installation. The wall abuts the sidewalk; there are no obstructions. The City will work with the selected artist to accommodate requests for access to power and water as well as overnight storage of materials. The mural should be installed to withstand weather and other site conditions for a term to be agreed upon by the selected artist and the City in the mural agreement. The mural is subject to removal by the City at any time during or after the agreed upon period.

Policies:

  • The selected artist must show proof of liability insurance prior to beginning mural installation. The City of Woodstock, Benton Street LLC, and any other parties participating in installation must be named as additional insured entities.
  • Proposed designs remain the property of the artist unless the design is selected by the City. The selected design and installed mural will be the property of the City of Woodstock. As such, no royalties or fees, beyond the initial artist’s fee, will be attached to its ongoing use by the City.
  • Any unapproved substitutions or deviations from the approved final design or proposed materials may result in termination of contract, removal of imagery, and non-payment of any amount due. City staff will monitor mural installation.

North Benton Street Mural Artist Benefits

The artist stipend is $12,000. This amount must cover the artist’s design fee, supplies and travel. The City of Woodstock will pay for the substrate and equipment necessary to complete the project onsite. One-third of the amount will be paid when the mural agreement is signed; one-third at the project mid-point; and one-third when the project is completed.

Woodstock prides itself as McHenry County’s epicenter of artists, creative entrepreneurs, and those who appreciate imaginative expressions in an area rich with visionaries. Located in a collar county, Woodstock is a commuter rail stop away from Chicago and acts as a uniquely urban city surrounded by rural amenities such as agri-tourism farms, designated scenic drives and conservation areas nestled within glacial topography.

Woodstock’s rich history and vibrant sense of community provide a far-reaching opportunity for interested artists to express themselves, spark conversation, and capture the essence of a modern place rooted in its rich past.

Interested artists will find that Woodstock’s far-reaching marketing and recognizable Real Woodstock brand, along with community support for the arts, is tailor-made to propel commissioned works to the forefront of national awareness. Coupled with City support through its newly formed Arts Commission, artists commissioned for inaugural exhibits will be featured prominently as the public arts program continues to gain momentum through well-curated 2-D and 3-D art installations.

Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition (Boone, NC) – Call For Artists

[Sponsored Listing] The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts announces a call for artists for the 36th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition. This nationally recognized juried competition, established by Martin and Doris Rosen, has long served as a point of pride for Appalachian State University and its annual summer arts celebration, An Appalachian Summer Festival. Each year, ten sculptures are selected for installation in outdoor, public settings across the university campus.

The Rosen Award winners are announced at the Annual Sculpture Walk in July, a highlight of the summer festival season. This year’s competition juror is Elizabeth Brim. Brim is a blacksmith and teacher, living in western North Carolina. She’s best known for feminine imagery in her ironwork. A native of Columbus, Georgia, she graduated with an MFA in printmaking before studying and working with a variety of materials at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.

Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition Prizes

Cash prizes are awarded for first ($3,500), second ($2,500), and third place ($1,500). All artists whose works are installed will receive a $1500 honorarium to offset round trip transportation, lodging, and incidental expenses. The finalist sculptures remain on campus for a year and are accessible to faculty, students, and staff as well as the general community. Sales are encouraged as the program has a history of sales to private and corporate collections. All sales are subject to 40% commission.

“We normally walk through the world filtering out so much information and in so doing we trade wonder for efficiency. When a piece of art is put in your way and you stop to notice it, notice the things that move you, the choices the artist made, the parts of nature or industry that are evoked, then you start noticing more in general. Noticing begets noticing, begets wonder and awe, because those things are always out there in the world, but sometimes we need something to call to us and to pull us out of the everyday fog. All the artists on the art walk succeed in doing this in different ways.” – Ian Henderson, past juror

Superfine Art Fair artists report feeling taken care of, empowered, and in control of their careers.

Curate, curate, curate. That’s the mantra for each fair. While every artist is incredible in their own way, Superfine’s team hand-picks those with individual style, a high level of professionalism, and top-quality work. You may even feel a little intimidated at first by the artists around you, but that feeling will soon switch to pride.

Superfine are big believers that a proper presentation makes all the differences. Whether open-air or indoor, art fairs exemplify a higher level of production than most art fairs for individual artists.

Buyers buy more art when they feel comfortable interacting with the artists. Superfine creates a relaxed atmosphere that encourages art sales.

Courthouse Expansion (Concord, NC) – Call For Artists

Courthouse Expansion (Concord, NC) – Call For Artists

[Sponsored Listing] Cabarrus County, North Carolina is seeking artists or artist collaborations to create innovative, original, and site-specific artwork for the Cabarrus County Courthouse Expansion that is currently under construction in downtown Concord, NC.

Click here for the application / registration

Enter by: 20 Dec 2021

The Art Selection Committee for this project is seeking an artist or artist team who can understand and express, in a suspended, permanently-installed, large-scale piece, the Courthouse’s role in providing sound and fair justice. The location of the art will be in the main public lobby, where high windows afford views of the artwork from outside the building on three sides, as well as inside.

The total public art budget for the Courthouse Expansion project, including all aspects of design, fabrication, transport, and installation, is $350,000. One (1) to three (3) finalists will each receive a $2,500 stipend to cover design costs for their proposal and travel/ presentation.

About the Cabarrus County Courthouse

When completed, the new Cabarrus County Courthouse will be a 313,000 SF court facility that includes a new 240,000 SF addition to the existing 1975 courthouse. Together with the new construction, the existing 73,000 SF facility will undergo complete interior renovation and repurposing to fulfill long-term, multi-generational space requirements.

As noted in the Designers’ Narrative for the project, “While the existing courthouse fronting Union Street will be completely renovated, a new addition and public entry (off Means Ave Pedestrian Plaza) will reshape the identity of the courthouse campus. The intentional siting of this new primary entry is the defining element of the concept.”

Similarly, the artwork commissioned for this project will reshape and help define the perceptions of those entering or passing the Courthouse and frame a new experience of a ‘house of justice.’
The artwork will not only complement the architecture of the building, and provide an attraction – and distraction – for those entering; but also it shall help shift mindsets.

About Castlegar Sculpturewalk

Inspired by, and borne of, local artist Pat Field’s participation in the Sculpturewalk program of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Castlegar Sculpturewalk began in 2010 with just ten sculptures. When Castlegar City Council learned of Sioux Falls’ downtown revitalization initiative tied to the cultural economy, they realized that they faced many of the same downtown revitalization issues and agreed to a trial project.

Incredibly, with community and basin support, and a dedicated group of volunteers, this cautious trial project grew beyond expectations into Castlegar becoming The Sculpture Capital of Canada™. Downtown Castlegar is now one of the few venues in Canada where artists have the opportunity to show and sell outdoor sculptural work, bringing international artists to the community, and supporting emerging local and regional talent.
