[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] The New York Center for Photographic Art (NYC4PA) announces a call for artists for Monochrome, an online photography competition.
The first photographs to be part of the world of art were monochrome prints. The images were captured by large format cameras, developed into negatives, and printed in the darkroom. The world of photography has come a long way since then with color dominating so much of what we shoot, and cameras are now an integral part of our very portable phones. With so many color images around us, there is still something special about a monochrome print, whether it be black and white, sepia, or even shades of a single color. These are the images where all the emotion, texture, and beauty are expressed in gradations from light to dark.

The word curve has a broad spectrum of meanings from throwing a curve ball to slowing down for the curve on a country road, and let’s not forget the curves associated with the human body. For this call the focus is on images where a curve or curves is an important element of the composition. No matter where you photograph the possibilities are endless. It can be that winding road. The Book As Art Theme
The Book As Art v.12: Rock, Paper, Scissors is the twelfth edition of an art show celebrating books: objects that, in an increasingly digital world, stubbornly survive.
Rock, Paper, Scissors draws its inspiration from the childhood game of chance. This zero-sum game, played with symbols made with the players’ hands, has origins dating back to Han Dynasty China, and later, Japan.
The game can have many variations: number of players, different names, or a reordering of the words: “rock,” “paper,” and “scissors.” Whether these objects are animals or elements, the concept remains the same. By using a simple mathematical formula, hand symbols, and a bit of luck, a decision is produced for the combatants.
The objects in this exhibition should interpret the concept of the book and invite the viewer to look beyond the printed page to where ideas, words, and symbols are transformed and are transfigured. Artists are challenged to look inward and outward, to interpret and embrace the childlike fun of this seemingly simple, classic game that blends history, nature, and mathematics with a bit of luck.
Or, simply give yourself over, and play a game of chance! 1, 2, 3…

[Side Arts Certified Sponsored Listing] The New York Center for Photographic Art (NYC4PA) announces a call for artists for Primary Colors 2024, an online photography competition.
Red, yellow, and blue are the three basic paint colors an artist needs to create all the colors they use on their palate. Although most of what we see in our daily life is the world of color generated from the infinite number of combinations of these elements, each stands out on its own as an important visual element. This competition is about images in which one of these colors is a critical component.

For Primary Colors, submit each image into one of the categories: Red, Yellow, or Blue. Do you have a monochrome image with a red car parked at the curb, a portrait with a funky pair of yellow sunglasses, or a city image with a blue bench as the major element? Have you modified a print to be all shades of red? Essentially any image where red, yellow, or blue stands out as an important part of the composition fits the bill. Be creative and send your best!

Doors, windows, arches, frames, and tunnels are so much a part of our lives. There are so many ways to think about them. We can look at or through them. The juror, David Reuss, is a proud New York City native with over thirty years’ experience in illustration and fine art. His work encompasses an array of subjects, mediums, and clients. He is an award-winning member of the Salmagundi Club where he teaches painting and drawing. An Executive member of the Society of Illustrators, he currently serves as Membership Chair and Treasurer. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and earned his Master’s Degree in Arts and Cultural Management at Pratt Institute. “Strength is what appeals mostly to me in art. The work can be any medium, style, subject or size, however in the end the work must have power.”
Selected artists will have the opportunity to exhibit in an historic gallery facility that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The gallery has 11 foot ceilings and five large exhibit rooms, holding up to sixty works.
About Mills Pond Gallery
Smithtown Township Arts Council operates Mills Pond Gallery in an historic Greek Revival building built in 1838. There are Five gallery rooms and the facility can display an average of 60-70 works of art. Adaptation of Mills Pond House for public use has introduced modern mechanical systems to the structure without impairing its historic integrity. Gallery lighting and handicapped access have been designed to complement the original building. Notable among the ca. 1838 Grecian details are the gold-veined marble mantelpieces, ornamental plater “centres” applied to the ceilings, and front and rear stoops supported by wooden Doric columns.
Mills Pond house preserves the locality’s name, but departs from tradition in other respects. Its high-style Grecian design is unusual on Long Island and the hand of an accomplished architect is nearly unique at this early date. Pollard’s influence is seen in the use of imported materials: Albany boards, Carolina yellow pine, English glass, Connecticut stone, and Santo Domingan mahogany. The silvered hardware, decorative plaster, and carpeting were bought in New York City shops. William Wickham Mills died in 1865. His home descended in the family until its gift to the Town of Smithtown in 1976. Today, it is preserved for use as an arts-related facility.
