The Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) summer residency is one of three residencies offered to artists at the park in the summer of 2020. The residency is just outside the park. It is very close to the Kahuku Unit of HAVO and about 45 minutes by car to the park headquarters and / or the summit of the volcanoes. The house is large, near the famous beaches of green sand, and can accommodate a family, art collective, or musicians group. There is a studio and a demo booth (for musicians and podcasters) at the house.
Located on the Big Island, Hawai’i, USA, HAVO is one of the jewels of the U.S. Park System. It is home to Mauna Kea and Kīlauea Volcanoes, some of the most sacred places in the Hawaiian Islands, and many unique and precious flora and fauna. A vehicle is required for this residency. (Lyft or Uber are not practical workarounds on the Island.)

Selected artists will receive a $2000 stipend and one month housing at a multi-bedroom house which includes an artist studio and a demo booth for musicians / sound artists / podcasters. Selected artists are eligible to donate a single artwork through NPAF that will (by mutual agreement) be a part of the NPS’s historic art collection. The National Parks Arts Foundation’s residencies were recently named one of 7 Artist Residency Programs ‘with career launching power.’ NPAF was recently the subject of a Hyperallergic Feature about the usefulness of art in the National Parks as a way to counter rampant oil and gas development strategies.

SummerWorks Presentations: SummerWorks seeks proposals for new projects that will be ready for presentation in August 2020. They are interested in works and artists that tackle urgent and complex questions of our time; that celebrate curiosity, wonder and adventure; and that expand the possibilities of what performance can be. Works for theatre, gallery, outdoor, and non-traditional settings are welcome, as are proposals for site-specific and immersive contexts. Proposed works should have some previous development or presentation history.
SummerWorks Lab: The SummerWorks Lab is a place for exploration, experimentation, and process. SummerWorks invites proposals for projects to be shared with an audience at a crucial stage of development as well as experiments that use the Festival as a laboratory to test new ideas. Works for theatre, gallery, outdoor, and non-traditional settings are welcome, as are proposals for site-specific and immersive contexts. Of particular interest are projects that will benefit from audience engagement and feedback during the Festival, with the potential of this to inform the future of the work.
Public Works: The Public Works programming brings artists and audiences together in the public realm to experience Toronto in new ways. How does the city shape how we move? What else is possible? How can this be realized through performance? Of particular interest are projects that play with momentum and time. Proposals for outdoor, non-traditional, site-specific and immersive contexts are expected; and works created for audiences to traverse a location or the landscape of Toronto are encouraged. 3-5 projects will be selected for this special call and provided a guaranteed fee of $1,500 CAD to $5,000 CAD (dependent on scale and budget of the project). These performances will be free to the public and should be designed with accessibility in mind.
Performance Festival 2020 Artist Benefits
- The Performance Festival 2020 provides a framework, which includes publicity and marketing, technical and performance scheduling, box office, front of house management, and administrative support. If you’re not in an outdoors, non-traditional or site-specific venue we’ll also provide a venue, technical staff and lighting designer.
- Presentations can expect 5 performances in the Festival.
- Labs can expect 3 performances in the Festival.
- Artists participating in Presentations or Labs will receive 70% of their box office revenue.
- Artists participating in Public Works will be provided a guaranteed fee of $1,500 CAD to $5,000 CAD; dependent on scale and budget of the project.
- Projects are typically provided 30 – 60 minute timeslots. If your project is longer, please explain in your proposal. If your project is 30 minutes or less you’ll be considered for curation as a double-bill with another performance work.
- Access to free workshops from industry leaders in producing, marketing, production, audience engagement and accessibility.
- An artist pass, providing you with highly discounted rates for all performances, events and free access to workshops during the 11-day Festival.
- An engaged and collaborative team. We provide mentorship and advice for all productions in the Festival, so if you’re unsure if something is possible, get in touch! We want to hear about big ideas and help make them reality.
Social Equity
For the last two years SummerWorks venues have been physically accessible. SummerWorks provides ASL for all our events. They provide visual stories for patrons, and work with artists to create relaxed performances. Over the past two years they have engaged in consultancy with Tangled Arts+Disability and Deaf Spectrum.
In the coming years they hope to include live captioning and audio description at all SummerWorks produced events plus live streaming of workshops to make these available to those who aren’t able to travel to the venue, and extend accessibility training to all Front of House and volunteers.
Through the Pay What You Can model, they have opened up the Festival to a wider socio-economic bracket. Those that can afford to are able subsidize affordable tickets, allowing SummerWorks to offer cheaper tickets while not reducing the artist’s income. SummerWorks runs a Pay It Forward scheme, additional tickets can be purchased that are then offered to members of partner organisations free of charge.

The Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists 2020 provides time for uninterrupted work in an inspiring and historic setting made unique by Brittany’s extraordinary light, distinctive landscape, and rich cultural traditions. The program awards successful applicants with free housing and studio space in the village of Léhon, France. Residents are responsible for most meals and incidental expenses. MICA charges no fees for application to or participation in the Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists.

The selection committee and program directors seek four to eight practicing American visual artists, regardless of affiliation. Applicants must not be students at the time of their application. They are looking for artists who can use the specific character of the residency experience productively and whose mix of media, approaches, styles, and focus will create a dynamic and collegial community. The residency is best suited for artists working in the traditional two-dimensional disciplines of painting and drawing.
The natural landscape of Brittany and its historic (and prehistoric) built environment, to say nothing of the magical light in the west of France, are ideal for those artists working on site, en plein aire. Photographers using digital media will find the residency’s setting inspiring. Artists working three dimensionally might find the residency useful if their residency work takes the form of two-dimensional paintings or drawings produced as research or complements to later three-dimensional work accomplished in their home setting.
The committee does not accept applications from artists proposing film, video, or other time arts projects. They offer large shared studio space that opens into the expansive Abbey gardens; however, the residency has no kilns, darkrooms, tools, or technical spaces necessary for complex or large-scale fabrication.
Klots International Program For Artists 2020 Artist Benefits
This residency supplies a rare opportunity for talented artists to deepen their practice for a period of eight uninterrupted weeks in an inspiring setting in the west of France. The residents participate in an important closing exhibition sponsored by the commune of Léhon.
Residents have an opportunity to interact with townspeople and important officials as well as local artists. They can explore intriguing megalithic monuments and Roman ruins that dot the landscape. Artists experience aspects of French village life, including amenities available in Dinan, such as a local outdoor market. The residency is close to historic sites, such as Saint- Malo, Mont-Saint. Michel, and the spectacular Brittany coastline.

In 2013 NOAPS started advertising its “Best of America” exhibitions in national art magazines along with marketing in social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises. A garden of purple is always in bloom! NYC4PA is looking for images in which one of these colors stands out as a critical element. It can be black and white with a single point of color; a green, orange, or purple monochrome; or any image where a secondary color stands out as a focal point. The possibilities in nature are endless with green leaves and lawns, orange bursts of autumn color and purple flowers, and magical purple hazes that can set off late afternoon scenes. The total prizes for Secondary Colors 2019 is $3000. There is a grand prize, three first prizes, three second prizes, three third prizes, 15 juror’s selections, and 20 honorable mentions. Yeiser Art Center announces a call for artists for Art Through the Lens 2019, an annual international juried contemporary photography exhibition. It provides photographers with an outlet for their art, encouragement for growth in their vision and presentation, and cash rewards for works of exceptional merit. Artists may submit up to five photographic entries. All photo-based imagery including video and moving images created through photographic processes are eligible including non-lens made images.
