They believe in giving back to both local and national causes that promote the good for all. They actively assist both for profit and non-profits by promoting their fundraising events through their Facebook and Instagram accounts. Committee members can be found on the pathway on “pod picking” day to assist with the removal of the invasive Black Swallow Wort plant.
The Marginal Way walkway is free to all, has no gates and no admission fees. It is open year round to both residents and visitors alike. The walkway is paved and handicapped accessible. The small beaches that are accessed by the walkway are open and free to the public. About Marginal Way Preservation Fund
The Marginal Way is one of the most painted and beloved places anywhere in America. A 1 1/4 mile meandering pathway along the Atlantic in the heart of Ogunquit, ME, the conveyance of this precious strip called the “Marginal Way,” is the finest donation the Town of Ogunquit has ever received. Josiah Chase, Jr. donated the original parcel in 1925. Beginning in a corner of Oarweed Cove, the now-paved footpath meanders through bayberry, honeysuckle and bittersweet, gnarled shrubs of fragrant pink and white sea roses that frame expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. The picturesque footpath is called “the margin” because of its patterned development along the edge of Maine’s cliffs.
For more than 85 years, persuasive philanthropists have worked tirelessly to protect and preserve the Marginal Way. The Marginal Way has survived hurricanes, development booms, and municipal budget shortfalls. Credit goes to Ogunquit’s Marginal Way Committee and our non-profit Marginal Way Preservation Fund, a 501.c.3 organization. The Preservation Fund has raised over 1 million dollars since its inception to preserve and protect this precious strip of land for future generations.
