The Baron Prize is open to artists, filmmakers, and photographers working in any medium, from anywhere in the world, and over the age of 18.
The first and second edition of the Baron Prize was judged by a transnational panel including Ashleigh Kane (Dazed & Confused), Chiara Bardelli Nonino (Italian Vogue), Ché Zara Blomfield (Art Editor Baron and Curator), Petra Collins (Curator and Photographer), Sue Webster (Artist), Bruce LaBruce (Artist and Director), and Nadia Lee Cohen (Photographer). Past winners have included Matthew Grubb, Frances Wilks, and Ramona Wang.
The third edition of the Baron Prize will be judged by a panel including Julie Verhoeven (Artist), Matthew Holroyd (Baron Founder), Sunil Gupta (Photographer), and PZ Today (Creative Director).
The winner will be announced in June 2021 and the winners prize is £1000 and a £1000 gift certificate to spend at Baron Books.
Baron Books was launched in 2011, stocked worldwide in 20 different countries. Baron is a conceptual publishing house and book store, collaborating with renowned artists to present their projects as books, apparel, and events under the Baron & Baroness brand name or self titled artist books plus stocking the finest art, fashion, and design books. Many Baron published books are in collections including those at the MoMA NYC and The LUMA Foundation. The Kent Medway Museums National Portfolio Organisation Partnership (KMM NPO) are seeking proposals from sound artists to create new audio artworks to be accessioned as permanent artefacts within the museum collections. ‘Ten Songs for a Lar’ is an ambitious new commission searching for multiple audio interpretations of a bronze ‘Lar’ – a household god figurine (dated circa. 200AD) held in the collections at The Guildhall Museum, Rochester, UK.

This commission is part of the KMM NPO’s ambition to produce artworks that encourage audiences to think about ‘What is collecting? What makes a display? Which stories are being told at museums and how?’ Museum objects, often grouped in predefined, restricted spaces sit silently, sparsely captioned, awaiting the attention of further, deeper, exploration. Museums do not just collect, care, and exhibit objects; they categorise, contextualise, and interpret objects to fulfill their own, and their intended audiences, requirements. The many stories behind these often human made objects, and the emotive connections they intend to make, can therefore become difficult to obtain.
The KMM NPO is looking to appoint 10 musicians or artists (from across the globe) working with sound to create individual, thought provoking, emotive works to interpret a Lar figurine – an inherently ‘traditional’ museum object. Without the need for images, physical presence, and perhaps even words, we want to know: ‘what does this object say to you, and what stories do you wish to give voice to, and bring to life, through music and sound?’.
Ten Songs For A Lar: Benefits
Successful artists will receive £1,000 per selected track (inclusive of VAT).
Inspired by the Guildhall Lar, the commission will comprise of 10 separate audio responses. The 10 audio responses will:
- Become permanent digital artefacts accessioned (added to) the collections of the NPO partners
- Made into a physical, limited-edition vinyl record to be deposited in each of the museums partners collections
- Be promoted individually and as a group of audio tracks (album)
- Exhibited together as part of a touring exhibition/display
- Through the process of this commission the KMM NPO also intends to achieve broader aims of:
- Showing and interpreting collections in new and exciting ways
- Reaching new, and broader audiences
- Extend the cultural offering at each of the partner organisations
- Promote a diverse and varied point of view in response to traditional museum items
- Continue to challenge the boundaries of commissioning within museums by embracing non-physical, non-visual, creative outputs
- Maximise the potential of those working from home, via digital platforms and the ability to work and share creativity within the current climate
- Lead innovatively, and with flexibility – supporting and showcase artist otherwise unable to currently work and develop their practice

Artrooms Fair announces a call for artists for Artrooms Fair London with an extended deadline. The Fair will run from the 11th to the 13th January 2019 at iconic Meliã White House Hotel, Albany St, London NW1 3UP near Regent’s Park in London. The Portico Library announces an artist/curator opportunity for a research residency and exhibition, Sharing the Portico Library’s Hidden Heritage. The Library particularly welcomes artists with an enthusiasm for interpreting historical material.

In March 2018 the library was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to catalogue its archive and promote its findings through an exhibition entitled ‘Sharing The Portico Library’s Hidden Heritage.’ The Library is inviting artists and curators to collaborate on a research project to emphasize the collection’s 21st-century context and relevance. The exhibition, launching in December 2018 and supported by The Zochonis Charitable Trust, will feature significant discoveries and provide an informative visual presentation of the archiving process itself.
Applicants must demonstrate a previous record of successful similar projects. They must provide examples of original, distinctive work. The Library aims to promote a wide variety of voices and perspectives.

Parker Harris announces a call for artists for the fourth installment of the Derwent Art Prize 2018. The Prize was conceived in 2012. It aims to reward excellence by showcasing the very best 2D and 3D artworks created with any pencil or coloured pencil as well as water soluble, pastel, graphite, and charcoal.
